Entering the Japanese manga industry — Part 11 “Drawing Skill” In the past, Korean artists who entered the Japanese manga industry generally had strong drawing skills and placed great importance on their artwork. European artists who came to Japan then were much the same, as were Chinese artists. And drawing skill had one important commercial advantage. From the perspective of Japanese publishers, there was an appeal in being able to think, “We can hire an artist with this level of drawing ability and productivity, but pay them at the rate of a newcomer.” It was also a time when Japanese readers placed much more importance than they do today on drawing ability and the dedication put into the artwork. Simply having strong drawing skills and being diligent in your artwork could, at the very least, give you a chance to make your debut and get your first serialization. Today, the times have changed in many ways. In many areas of manga, drawing skill isn't as important as it used to be. Instead, understanding how manga communicates and expresses itself is becoming increasingly important. This is because the techniques used to express things visually in manga keep advancing. In other words, “You just need to be good at drawing” is no longer enough. You need to understand manga. In fact, Japanese manga editors of the past sometimes had a misconception about foreign artists. They assumed, “If someone can draw this well, they must understand manga, too.” But some artists had simply developed their draftsmanship without developing an understanding of manga—especially an understanding of direction and visual expression. Some had barely read any manga at all. And, perhaps most surprisingly, there were even mangaka who looked down on manga itself. They would say things like, “Japanese manga is all about characters with huge eyes.” That kind of dismissive attitude existed in the West as well. Anyway, when editors saw someone with exceptional drawing skills, they sometimes assumed that the person must understand manga and decided to give them a chance. Only to discover that, in reality, the person did not know how to make manga. I once attended a gathering where I met one French comics artist alongside the great Japanese manga master. I saw him sitting there drawing only his own pictures. He was trying to impress one of the waitresses at the restaurant with his drawings. I suppose he thought he was very good at drawing. And that being good at drawing was enough. Yes, I still believe that drawing skill has value. But what is more important is understanding manga and understanding how to express things through it. This includes visual direction and staging, the use of techniques, the ability to convey emotion, and the ability to communicate a story smoothly and clearly—which is different from direction and staging. When manga industries begin to emerge in countries around the world, drawing skill tends to become less important in their early stages. This is something worth paying attention to. On the other hand, if global manga platforms emerge around the world, drawing skill will become far more important than it was in the past. This is what Hollywood developed in the 1990s under the idea of “well-made” entertainment. A mangaka's life is long, just like our own. Over that lifetime, there will be many changes in the times, and many changes in manga itself. Whatever changes may come, having strong drawing skills can never be a bad thing. Drawing skill is like strong timber. It helps a mangaka's life withstand the waves of changing times. And drawing skill influences a manga artist in much the same way that technology influences human beings. Drawing is like a way of seeing the world. It is one of the ways human beings understand the world. And through the effort to develop drawing skills, you also gain many things that help you understand manga. Well, not everything, but many things... I also think a mangaka should have an attitude like this: “You don't have to draw perfectly, but you should always try to draw better and better.” This is a feeling you have for your readers, and a feeling you have for manga itself. The heart is not in reaching the destination. It is in the effort to get there.
Entering the Japanese manga industry — Part 10 “Giving Up on Japanese” I have lived in Japan for almost twenty years now, and I still don't really speak Japanese. That is because, just before I came to Japan, I decided not to study Japanese. Until around the end of 2006, when I had almost finished preparing to move to Japan, I naturally thought: “I'm going to live in Japan, so I need to study Japanese.” But then, so quietly and suddenly, one of the most important questions of my life came to me. “Hmm... I'm going to live in Japan, so I need Japanese...” “But what does the Japanese manga industry actually need? A foreign mangaka who speaks Japanese well? Or a foreign mangaka who works hard and makes great manga?” This was an enormously important question for me. It was a very fundamental question: “Does the Japanese manga industry need me?” Looking back, I have realized that most people who try to enter the Japanese manga industry never ask themselves that question. Their main concern is usually: “Do I need the Japanese manga industry?” Anyway, I did ask myself that question. And I have spent my life trying to become a mangaka who is needed by the Japanese manga industry and by Japanese readers. So instead of spending my time studying Japanese, I spent that time doing other things. I have talked about this in many places and to many people, but the occasion that left the strongest impression on me was when I spoke about it at the Shogakukan Manga Award ceremony in 2019. Standing before me were some of the greatest mangaka and great masters in Japan. When I told them this story, I heard a collective “Ahh...” from all around the room. I believe those great artists were immediately able to imagine what that choice meant—and the hardships in life that I would have to accept as a consequence of it. Giving up Japanese while living in Japan was not easy, of course. There were countless things I could have done if I had spoken Japanese well. And the longer I survived and the further I climbed in my career, the more urgently I felt the need to be able to communicate in Japanese myself. So the decision to give up studying Japanese, which I thought had been absolutely the right decision earlier in my career, gradually became a question: “Was I really right?” Maybe I had made a mistake. Should I start studying Japanese even now? And yet, even today, my final conclusion remains the same: I am glad that I did not study Japanese and instead spent that time studying manga. There have been countless difficulties, but if I had spent that time studying Japanese, I don't think I would have been able to enter Weekly Shonen Jump with the abilities and qualities I had. The opportunities I am preparing for now would probably never have come to me either. I would simply have been a foreigner who spoke some Japanese. And that alone would never have allowed me to write the kind of dialogue I wanted to write. So I leave Japanese to my Japanese manager, and English to Steve. They are both people I can trust. They understand manga very well, and they understand me as a mangaka and know my creative world better than almost anyone. And I can trust them. (I said that twice, Te-hee!) And they don't simply handle translation and interpretation. They take care of many different roles, which allows me to concentrate even more deeply on manga. Because of them, I can also work on various things related to the future of manga while continuing to create manga. That is what a partner is. The value of a partner is not limited to just one thing. Of course, I have had to endure enormous difficulties and costs along the way. But when two human beings come together and pursue a goal with everything they have, that is what it can look like. During the great wave of Korean manga artists entering Japan in the past, there were also several Japanese-entry agents and agent companies. They had various problems of their own as well. Japanese manga artists, on the other hand, do not have to suffer from any of these particular difficulties. That is simply the reality today. And that is why I hope that the younger creators who want to enter Japan will be able to use a different strategy. This is an area where someone needs to create and provide a solution that individuals cannot create for themselves. It would be much better if there were a method that was easier, more trustworthy, less expensive, and more reliable. And it would be even better if the knowledge and experience people gain could be passed down to the next generation. As I wrote in my previous article, having Japanese publishers provide interpretation and translation creates a great many problems. One of my ideas is support through something like the Saitama International Manga Center. There is another alternative, though. In fact, I think this may be an even better solution than the International Manga Center. I first talked about this idea on my YouTube channel several years ago. Companies involved in the manga industry, or governments, in each creator's home country could establish a Japanese branch office. For example, in North Saitama, you could spend around $800,000 to put four or five houses together and create a small “village.” It could serve as the Japanese office for the country's manga industry, as a management office supporting creators entering Japan, and as an affordable place where around twenty creators from that country could live. At the International Manga Center, foreign creators wouldn't be allowed to throw parties. But in this kind of “our country's village,” if the surroundings were mostly rice fields and farmland, you could have the occasional small party. A quiet barbecue, for example. Not a loud, Boobbayah thumping party. “Respect the basic etiquette of living among neighbors in Japan.” (There I go saying it twice again.) That should always be respected. To be continued...
