School works better when students have agency. We give students choices like: "Do you want to be at grade level in math, or do you want to get a grade ahead?" Why? Because agency creates intrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation creates lasting academic outcomes.

Education’s power lies in its purpose. The ideal educational realm opens a treasure trove. It lets kids delve into their interests and teaches them to weave these passions into their future. That’s what we’re doing at Primer.
We should be trusting kids with responsibilities early. At home, and at school. Giving them responsibilities gives them a sense of ownership. It shows them we take them seriously. And it helps them develop agency.
Kids sit in classrooms all day and aren’t given agency to set and achieve their own goals. Then when they graduate, we’re upset that they aren’t motivated to do anything. It’s not their fault. It’s the schools’.

This student joined Primer in the 5th percentile in math. They'd been given every "label" the traditional system could throw at them: SLD, 12:1 ratio, behavioral interventions, etc. 5 months later: Grew more than 98% of students in the US per MAP (now 27th percentile overall).
