This story makes me really sad. Presumptively, this athlete was coming from the NCAA—a multi-billion dollar generating enterprise—and was ready to PAY someone to play football. Ugh.
Negotiated with a player, no agent, and told him we’d do a 3-year deal with a $1000 bonus. There was a long pause, he was uncomfortable, said: “Mr. Brandt, I only have about $200 now. But I promise I’ll have the rest when I come there. I promise!” I said “Oh no, no. We pay you.”
One Power-5 coach said this tonight in response to my question on NIL $$ and May 1st deadline. “Some players are threatening the portal with no intentions of leaving. They want to drive up their price at the last minute before the deadline comes. It’s all crazy”
