Glad #PBSReconstruction includes world’s fairs. Yet as an example of the ‘twilight zone’ b/w Recon & Jim Crow, black activists ran a ‘Colored Dept’ at the New Orleans world’s fair in 1884. Latin American governments, esp. Mexico, also played a large role in the NOLA fair #HATM
The so-called ‘Home Rule’ constitutions of the 1870s that follow Democratic return to power are important also. They’re white supremacist of course, but do not bring de jure Jim Crow like constitutions of the 1890s-1908. #PBSReconstruction #HATM
The New South shouldn’t be reduced to Henry Grady or beginning in the late 1880s, both are implied by #PBSReconstruction. For ex, NOLA boosters argue for a New South that is quite cosmopolitan & transnational, which is fully expressed at the 1884 New Orleans World’s Fair #HATM
Overall a solid #ReconstructionPBS so far. If you’re intrigued by New Orleans from 1865-1880s as a case study of how the postbellum South sought modernization through more ties with Latin America, feel free to shoot me a DM. #HATM
Wish #ReconstructionPBS was more overt that in the Civil War Era the GOP favored activist gov & saw federal gov power as a vehicle for social mobility. Democrats were the party of limited government, which was overwhelmingly a means to the end of supporting white supremacy #HATM
