Ok this is cool and everything, but let me repeat this: INDIE IS NOT A FUCKING GENRE INDIE IS NOT THE SCALE OF YOUR TEAM INDIE IS NOT A FEELING Indie is being INDEPENDENT OF A LARGER COMPANY/ORGANIZATION'S FINANCING AND DECISIONS. UBISOFT is never "indie". Period. Jesus christ

That being said, COOL if they're giving the team the freedom to do what they want with it and not controlling the decision pipeline or the end product, but if Ubisoft is funding this, it's not indie.
@Programancer Insane to me these big companies being like "oooh, we need that 'indie' money too!"
@Programancer This is mad funny with ubisoft of all people because In my mind I keep thinking brawlhalla is Indie, and forgetting ubisoft bought em years ago
@Programancer I love how it was said to be "indie scale" which implies it was made by wayyyyy less devs inside the company than any other games rn and y'all are freaking the fuck out over it.
@Programancer I dunno, I feel in practice people use "indie" differently than its literal meaning. We already had the whole Dave the Diver debacle, but in the flip side of the coin, calling Hitman 3 an "indie game" sounds weird even if it is indeed independently published.
@Programancer FINALLY! Someone else who is always pissed when Paramount and Atari show in the Indie Worlds.
@Programancer but Ubisoft knows Indie is a buzzword they can use to market the game
@Programancer I really hate to play devil's advocate for Ubisoft, i really do, but they didn't call it an indie game to be fair. they just said it was at the scale of one. which, from everything i've seen about the game, is accurate.
@Programancer i guarantee you that the "indie scale" is just buzzword-speak for "we made it a small team so we have to pay less people" like good on them for giving the team loads of freedom if thats actually happening and isn't just being Said? but yeah if something is funded by AAA it's AAA
@Programancer Wow, they're really trying to cash in on the indie love at the moment.
@Programancer How out of touch is Ubisoft? They don't even know what indie means. No wonder they are crashing hard.
@Programancer Yeah indie means 1 guy who lives off of nothing but chicken tendys (the good kind) and devs away in a basement
@Programancer I’m not a fan of it, but the meaning of words does change over time man. Let’s use Indie, but in music terms. It too used to mean the band were with an independent (non-major) label. In time it did become the name of a genre of music due to those independent bands’ sound.
@Programancer i've seen people somehow still call minecraft indie even though it hasn't been since like 13 years ago
@Programancer Indie is a purely vibe based term with no set definition and I think people should accept this rather than have this same discussion every few months.
@Programancer That's almost certainly why they used the term "indie-scale" in the post instead of saying it outright. Indie may not refer to the scale of your team, but most indies do have a pretty small team, so it's correlated. The video editor clearly didn't get the memo.
@Programancer @lukewasthefish Indie definitely isnt "paying 1k a month for a gold checkmark" either!
@Programancer I think you cease to be indie and become AA at a certain scale actually but that's besdies the point. I mean this is really bad usage of the phrase.
@Programancer Isn't the idea that they've partnered with an 'indie' studio that's presumably the one developing the game, whilst they publish it? That's how the trailer reads to me.
@Programancer You'd have thought the industry would learn this lesson after the Dave the Diver game awards fiasco.
@Programancer Holy you need to get off the internet bud, the tweet says indie-scale and while true indie doesn't always mean small those two are usually related. Its a very small team proud of their game and you are crashing out for what?
@Programancer "This is Rogue" VERY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER "Indie-scale" VERY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZED "Made by a small team who really care" VERY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER
@Programancer I agree and to illustrate, I'll say that Star Citizen is an indie game. Even though Cloud Imperium Games is a massive studio, it isn't part of any bigger corporation... So "indie-scale" really means nothing.
@Programancer Say it louder for those fucking Dave the Diver people
@Programancer It's literally not made by Ubisoft what are you even talking about
Yeah its been common talking to people at events when they go "so tell us about your game" and they respond with "oh you're not indie by name, you're a REAL indie" Makes me feel better about the hyper polished stuff I see now that have access to funding and full time teams worth of effort
