Christina Bohannan is a law professor who served in Iowa’s State Senate and is now making her third attempt to win Iowa’s first district seat. She also promotes a pragmatic approach to policymaking and is endorsed by the New Democratic Coalition.
She is pro-Ukraine and opposes Trump’s war in Iran. She is generally pro-AI and supports technological innovation. She has been very outspoken about Trump’s tariff policies, opposes single-payer healthcare, and says we need to build and rehabilitate more housing.
Her anti-corruption agenda mirrors many mainstream Democrats, but she also explicitly calls for a Code of Ethics for SCOTUS judges as well as an independent body to investigate ethics violations in Congress.
Chris Pappas is a small business owner that has served in Congress since 2018 and legislates in a pragmatic, bipartisan way. He is a member of the center-left New Democrat Coalition, as well as the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. Like Ossoff, he prefers taking a fact-based approach to policy-making.
Unlike other candidates we have looked at who sometimes combine abundance language with more progressive ideas like rent fixing and subsidized affordable housing, Pappas is one of the most explicitly YIMBY candidates on our list. He talks about cutting red tape, increasing housing construction, revising zoning, streamlining bureaucracy, and incentivizing construction. He also supports an all-of-the-above approach to energy.
He recently voted for the Iran War Powers resolution, explicitly supports Ukraine, blocked an ICE facility in his state, and voted to divert ICE’s $75 billion slush fund. He also sponsored the No Cashing In Act, which would require former members of Congress to file annual disclosures showing if they’ve received income from lobbyists.
He is also very good on personal liberty issues. As an openly gay man, if elected, he would be the second LGBT Senator currently serving. He co-sponsored the Equality Act, and recently introduced the SERVE Act, which would reinstate the benefits of recently discharged military service members who were let go under Hegseth’s leadership on the basis of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Cait Conley is an Army veteran that served six tours overseas, including Iraq and Afghanistan. She is running to unseat Mike Lawler in New York and is endorsed by New Politics and the New Dems. She has a fairly pro-abundance agenda on housing and energy, which includes cutting red tape, increasing supply, and incentivizing mixed use housing.
Her counterterrorism work got her banned from Russia. She also later worked at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), where she focused on election integrity. Although this will be her first time in elected office if she wins, her impressive background also includes Harvard Kennedy School and MIT.
Her work at CISA makes her uniquely qualified to push for greater reforms to secure our elections. She also advocates for the John Lewis Voting Rights Act (to stop voter suppression efforts), and she wants to reinstate the Foreign Malign Influence Center—enacted in 2019 but dissolved by Tulsi Gabbard last year.
Roy Cooper became governor in 2016 in response to backlash over then-Governor Pat McCroroy’s signing of the overwhelmingly unpopular anti-trans bathroom bill. The bill caused corporations to boycott the state and Cooper openly condemned it. Cooper also battled election denialism from his opponent.
As governor, Roy Cooper signed into law several bills that cut down on administrative burdens and promoted economic development. The C-PACE program was adopted for North Carolina, which facilitates private financing for commercial property owners looking to modernize and upgrade their properties and businesses with new and better infrastructure. The Regulatory Reform Act also reformed occupational licensing and streamlined administrative processes.
In particular, Cooper has been one of the strongest advocates for science and technology we’ve seen and his approach to the now-controversial data center buildout stands out considerably. While his messaging on data centers has been more muted in recent days, he is responsible for a fairly sizable data center buildout in his state.
His data-driven approach to data centers was part of an ongoing all-of-the-above strategy, epitomized by an energy task force he created last year. In 2024, he announced North Carolina as the site for the first gigafactory in the United States producing sodium-ion batteries. Funding for that project ultimately fell through, but it demonstrates a notable openness to innovation in energy.
Finally, Cooper has also demonstrated very strong liberal values on the topic of defense and alliances. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Cooper marshaled resources from among the North Carolina National Guard, offering military equipment to aid Ukraine. He also joined other Governors in a phone call with Zelensky, offering very clear support for his effort to defend his country.
