A PAGB members survey revealed they anticipated between 75% - 98% of OTC medicine products being discontinued at the end of the grace period. OTC Pain relief, cold/flu, smoking, headlice, eye, oral, hay fever/allergy & antiseptics were likely to be affected. #ProtocolProblems

Flow of goods and materials coming into NI from GB is approx £10bn, the implication of the protocol is that business in NI face a £600m increase in the cost of bringing goods. Factor in £250m Trader Support Service, Digital Assistance Scheme, estimated annual cost of about £850m.

80% of medicines distributed by HDA members for NI are stored in GB & shipped daily based on orders for hospitals & pharmacies. HMRC declaration costs for HDA members moving medicines to Northern Ireland has amounted to £5million in the first half of 2021. #ProtocolProblems

Pharmaceutical firm Almac, recently announced the creation of 1,000 jobs in NI. For licensing reasons & even reasons of habit of doctors in ROI, the volume of cross-border trade is virtually nil. There are no obvious benefits of the Protocol from a medicines point of view.

#NIProtocol requires manufacturers to complete separate authorisations for GB & NI. A licence for 1 prescription medicine with three strengths, of 20,40 & 100MG would amount to £30,000 for the first year & anywhere between £7,500 & £27,000 each year after. #ProtocolProblems

A new cancer treatment for patients in GB has not been approved for Northern Ireland because of the Irish Sea border. MHRA had initially approved medical drugs for the whole UK. However, the Protocol means that NI is now bound by the European Medicines Agency. #ProtocolProblems
