We equate “doing for” God with “being with” God. They are not the same. I can do things for a person without a relationship with them. The Christian journey is a life of ever-deepening trust in God developed through ongoing stages of growing union and friendship.

I join many honoring Tim on this sad day of his departure. We planted our churches only 1 year apart in NYC in the late 80's. For years we enjoyed a fun day together traveling upstate to teach on leadership. A great servant/pastor/thinker-w/ impeccable integrity. Thank you Tim!!

This subject of fasting and spiritual practices in general has become a thing. Ash Wednesday sermons nowadays tend to center on the urging of practices. But that is not the gospel. If you want the essence of Ash Wednesday, just read Psalm 51, with all your heart as God grants it

Hmmm. If the Asbury phenomenon is not of the Spirit--if it is not the substance of the gospel--it will flame out as yet another sign of bland gnosticism, even though it may be a welcome pushback against cultural conformity. If it is of the Spirit...watch out!

A not-so-hot Asbury take: People say they’re encountering God’s presence. I’m always *for* that—no matter where, no matter whom. Some “revivals” convert some folks to lifelong devotion to Jesus & the marginalized who embody Jesus, some are emotion-driven bullshit. Time will tell.

A senior friend writes: I do think every day of laying down the burden of the flesh and going to Jesus. Maybe this is the day? Maybe another year or ten? So I try to keep my repentance up to the minute, as well as my “Thank you’s” and “I love you’s” and “I’m sorry’s”. Amen.
