Some personal news -- I'm leaving Google to go start a new company with a friend. More to be announced soon! I will stay deeply involved with the Keras project from the outside -- you'll still find me active on the GitHub repo! At Google, I'm leaving the project in excellent hands: Jeff Carpenter is taking over as team lead for Keras, and I couldn't have hoped for a better successor. I have full confidence in Jeff and the incredibly talented Keras team to continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible in deep learning. It's been an honor to work alongside them, and shipping multi-backend Keras 3 last year was a true highlight of my career. (Keras 3 + JAX remains my go-to deep learning stack!) I'm very grateful for my decade at Google. In that timespan deep learning went from a niche academic topic to a massive industry employing millions. Keras went from a small library used by a few thousand enthusiasts to a state-of-the-art framework used by 2 million developers. Today, Keras powers ML solutions in countless companies and touches the lives of people everywhere. You're constantly interacting with Keras models -- it powers your recommendations on YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify, the fraud-filtering of your credit card transactions, and the Waymo cars that drive you around San Francisco. Very excited about what's ahead, both for my new project and for Keras!
Keras is more than just a tool—it’s a community driving AI innovation. As @fchollet begins a new chapter, our commitment to Keras and open-source AI remains strong. Read more in our latest blog ➡️ goo.gle/3Z4Rncg
It is hard to overstate how strong the push for object-oriented programming was. It even bled out into other fields like education (look up "learning objects"). You had to organize your programming projects into hierarchical classes and you would be ridiculed if you did not. Java and C# are a reflection of this era. It took 25 years for the obsession to die down. Basically, the gurus had to be given time to retire. Object-oriented programming can work… but there are serious pitfalls that will make your projects harder to maintain and optimize. Deep inheritance is almost always a disaster. The lesson is: don’t blindly embrace the latest things even if everyone is. Masses will lead you astray. Be critical.
The older you get, the harder to resist saying "I told you so." When OO programming came in, it made no sense to me, and I've never used it. Everyone said I was too old to understand. Thirty years later, everyone's snapping out of it and wondering wtf they'd been thinking.

Breaking: Julia 1.7 was just released 🎉! Read the highlights in our newest blog post: julialang.org/blog/2021/11/j… Big thanks to the 79+ contributors and many release testers who made this possible! #JuliaLang
@eliascarvdev @AugustoCLeal @eliascarvdev I was too curious to wait. Here are the benchmark results from the same setup on an iMac. It appears ParallelKMeans.jl (github.com/PyDataBlog/Par…) from @AndrejOskin & @PyFinBlog continues to win the KMeans speed war :)
@AugustoCLeal @eliascarvdev @AndrejOskin @PyFinBlog I updated the benchmarks. The results appear to be the same as the last run. #JuliaLang
Great summary of new feature in the upcoming 1.7 release of #JuliaLang by @lpfeed. This got posted on the committers channel where we’re amused that you scooped us 😂 lwn.net/SubscriberLink…
I wanted to share my recent experience using Julia as the main data science driver. discourse.julialang.org/t/recent-exper… TLDR: I prefer it to Python and R, but there are definitely rough edges! The thing is, the rough edges will round out over time, and Julia is the way to go! #julialang
If @GitHub really believes that it is legal and safe to train Copilot on copyrighted code (GPL in this case), they should prove it by putting all of GitHub & Microsoft's proprietary code into the training set. If they're unwilling to do that, it really undermines their argument
github copilot has, by their own admission, been trained on mountains of gpl code, so i'm unclear on how it's not a form of laundering open source code into commercial works. the handwave of "it usually doesn't reproduce exact chunks" is not very satisfying
@matvil You can do this in one line using UrlDownload.jl from @AndrejOskin
2 years ago on stage I was asked “when will Deepfake video/audio impact trust & be believable in social engineering?” My response then was that we were 2 years away from undetectable Deepfakes. I wish my prediction then was wrong. We need synthetic media detection + labels ASAP.

"Looking at where we are today, I would be happier if Julia was the main language [for AI]" - Peter Norvig (youtube.com/watch?v=hVW1mw… around 40:40). We're working on it! His book was my one of my first exposures to AI. Surreal! #JuliaLang
