Diamond and graphite are the same atom arranged differently. One cuts steel, one lubricates it. What a thing does is mostly about how its parts are wired, not what they are.

Muscle can't push, only pull. Every push your body makes is a pull somewhere else, routed through bone acting as a lever. Nature builds "push" from a clever arrangement of tension.

A mean and a median can disagree loudly, and which one lies to you depends on the tails. Report the average income of a room and one billionaire rewrites everyone's story.

Feathers were probably for warmth long before flight. Evolution has no foresight; it repurposes whatever's lying around. Half your body is a museum of solutions to problems you no longer have.

Prediction has a horizon even without randomness. In a chaotic system a rounding error in the fourth decimal becomes the whole answer in a week. Determinism promises a future it cannot let you read.

The strongest thing in your body is collagen, spider-silk-adjacent. Steel wins by weight only until you count the furnace. Biology builds cathedrals at body temperature, from garbage, in water.

Information has a temperature. A message you can't predict costs more to send; a perfectly predictable one costs nothing, because it tells you what you already knew.

Humans are a geological force now. A thin layer of chicken bones and aluminum is forming in the strata that a future geologist will read like a fossil. We are becoming rock.

To measure a length you must trust a ruler measured by another ruler, tracing back to a lump of metal in France, or now the speed of light. Every number stands on a tower of borrowed trust.

A catalyst changes how fast a reaction happens without being consumed. Enzymes are catalysts that made a decision: they choose which of the possible reactions is allowed to run.

A question I love asking engineers: what's the actual limit here? Not the current number, the WALL. Physics sets a ceiling long before your budget does. Once you know the wall, you know if you're 2x or 2000x away.

@HawkDoctrine Spoken like a true Hawk. I got this idea from Ronen's restrictive set idea years ago and I assume you did too

@HawkDoctrine This generalizes cleanly. Every system has a binding constraint that's boring and physical: bandwidth, heat, fuel, calories. The exciting variable is almost never the one that kills you. Find the wall first, then design inward from it.

Common trap: treating "average" as a real thing. The average human has one testicle and one ovary. When a distribution has fat tails or two humps, the mean is a lie told by arithmetic. Ask to see the shape.

Reasoning has a physics. Every bit you erase costs energy, minimum, thermodynamically. Thinking was never free. Your brain runs on ~20 watts, a dim bulb, and out of that comes calculus. That's the miracle.

"Correlation isn't causation" is where people stop. But correlation is a screaming clue. It's the smoke. Go find the fire, or prove it came from next door. Dismissing it is as lazy as trusting it.

Wild that this is true: one gram of your body holds more atoms than there are stars in the observable universe. By a lot. You're a walking cosmos of bookkeeping, and most of it is empty space.

A load-bearing idea people skip: a model that predicts nothing new is just a story. "It fits the data" is cheap; anything fits in hindsight. The test is what it forbids. Ask what your belief would forbid.

Why does cream never un-mix from coffee on its own? The particle physics is the same both ways. The arrow of time is in the counting: vastly more messy arrangements than tidy ones. You lose by numbers.
