1/11 Why did the stock market look like it crashed today when most S&P 500 stocks actually went up? On October 22, the Nasdaq fell 2.6%, its worst day since June. But the Dow barely moved. So what actually happened? ⸻ 2/11 First, the numbers. Thursday’s closing results: • Nasdaq: -2.60% • S&P 500: -1.21% • Dow: +0.02% • Semiconductor index: -6.7% Tech stocks took a serious hit. But here’s the interesting part: more than 300 stocks in the S&P 500 actually rose. ⸻ 3/11 Wait, how can most stocks go up while the index falls? Because the S&P 500 isn’t a simple average of 500 stocks. It’s weighted by market value. Bigger companies have more influence. So when a few tech giants fall sharply, they can drag down the entire index. ⸻ 4/11 Think about a classroom. Imagine 500 students taking a test, but the grades of the 10 biggest students count much more than everyone else’s. Even if most students do well, the class average could fall. That’s basically what happened to the S&P 500 today. ⸻ 5/11 So why did tech stocks fall? A big reason was concern over AI spending. Meta reported better-than-expected results, but its shares still fell about 7%. Investors are worried about how much money companies are spending on AI and how long it will take to pay off. ⸻ 6/11 Here’s the economic problem. Building AI infrastructure costs a lot. Companies need data centers, chips, electricity, and financing. Those are expenses today. But the profits investors hope for may be years away. What happens if the returns don’t match expectations? ⸻ 7/11 And that’s why valuations matter. Investors often pay high prices for tech stocks because they expect strong future profits. But when confidence in those profits weakens, stock prices can fall. Even if the company itself is still growing. Good earnings don’t always mean a rising stock price. ⸻ 8/11 Now look at where some investors went. As tech stocks fell, U.S. Treasury bonds gained. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped below 5%. When investors buy bonds, their prices rise and yields fall. This is often called a “flight to safety.” ⸻ 9/11 But does this mean the AI boom is over? Not necessarily. Some investors believe today’s spending will support years of future growth. Others worry that stock prices already assume too much success. One bad trading day doesn’t settle that debate. ⸻ 10/11 Here’s the bigger question. When a handful of tech giants make up such a large part of an index, ordinary investors can become more exposed to the same risks. That’s what makes today’s selloff interesting. It wasn’t just about AI. It was also about how concentrated the market has become. ⸻ 11/11 Sources: Reuters (Oct. 22, 2026) S&P 500, Nasdaq End Sharply Lower as Revived AI Doubts Ignite Tech Selloff reuters.com/business/nasda… AP News (Oct. 22, 2026) How Major US Stock Indexes Fared Thursday apnews.com/article/1970e7… MarketWatch (Oct. 22, 2026) The U.S. Stock Market Is Fracturing Into Two Camps marketwatch.com/story/the-u-s-… WSJ (Oct. 22, 2026) Ten-Year Treasury Yield Drops Back Below 5% wsj.com/livecoverage/s…

1/10 Why do gas prices matter so much in elections? U.S. gasoline prices rose 34.2% year over year in September, adding to inflation just weeks before the midterms. But why does one price have so much political power? ⸻ 2/10 First, what happened? Gas prices have surged as the war with Iran disrupts global energy markets. The latest CPI report shows: • Gasoline: +34.2% year over year • Energy: +20.4% • Overall inflation: 3.7% That’s a lot of pressure coming from energy. ⸻ 3/10 Here’s how gas prices work. A big part of what we pay at the pump comes from crude oil. And oil is traded globally. So even if the U.S. produces plenty of oil, events thousands of miles away can still affect what Americans pay for gas. ⸻ 4/10 Now imagine a war threatening a major oil-producing region. Traders worry about supply disruptions. Less expected supply → higher crude oil prices → higher gasoline prices. And sometimes, even the fear of a shortage can move prices before supply actually falls. ⸻ 5/10 But gas doesn’t just affect drivers. Higher energy costs can make shipping, transportation, and production more expensive. Businesses may pass some of those costs on to consumers. That’s how an energy shock can spread through the economy and add to inflation. ⸻ 6/10 Here’s why gas is different from other prices. You probably don’t check the CPI report every month. But you see gas prices on huge signs almost every day. It’s one of the easiest ways to notice rising costs. And when people feel squeezed, that number becomes political. ⸻ 7/10 This is where elections come in. Some voters judge the economy through their own expenses. Economists call this pocketbook voting. Democrats have pointed to rising gas prices to criticize Trump and Republicans. But how much control does a president actually have? ⸻ 8/10 Here’s the other side. Presidents can influence energy markets through policy, but they can’t simply choose the global price of oil. Wars, global supply, demand, and refining capacity all matter. So blaming one person for every price increase misses part of the story. ⸻ 9/10 And that’s what makes this interesting from a political economy perspective. Gas prices are global, but the political consequences are local. Voters want affordable energy. Politicians want their trust. Oil markets respond to supply and demand. So how much responsibility should a president bear for gas prices? ⸻ 10/10 Sources: NYT (Oct. 14, 2026) Gas Prices Are Up 34% From a Year Ago, Adding to Inflation Pressures nytimes.com/2026/10/14/bus… U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics September 2026 CPI Report bls.gov/news.release/a… Reuters (Oct. 5, 2026) Iran War and U.S. Gas Prices reuters.com/business/energ… KQED (Oct. 15, 2026) California Democrats and Gas Prices kqed.org/news/12104393/…

1/10 Why would Trump ease new sanctions on Russia just weeks before the midterms? On October 16, he signed an order waiving major parts of a new sanctions law. The interesting question: why are gas prices and foreign policy suddenly connected? ⸻ 2/10 First, look at the numbers. According to the latest U.S. inflation report: • Gasoline prices: +34.2% from a year ago • Overall inflation: 3.7% • Gasoline accounted for over half of September’s monthly CPI increase Energy is a big part of the inflation story. ⸻ 3/10 Why does gas matter so much politically? Think about it. You might not check the inflation report every month, but you see gas prices whenever you drive past a station. When that number keeps climbing, people notice. And politicians know that. ⸻ 4/10 Here’s the economics behind it. Oil trades in a global market. When war threatens production or shipping, supply becomes uncertain. Less available oil → higher prices → more expensive gasoline. And because oil is used across the economy, the effects don’t stop at the pump. ⸻ 5/10 Higher energy costs can also make transportation, shipping, and production more expensive. Businesses may pass some of those costs to customers. That’s one way an energy shock can contribute to inflation. So lowering energy prices becomes an economic priority. ⸻ 6/10 Now, back to Russia. The new Graham Act introduced additional sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia and certain countries buying Russian energy. Trump’s October 16 order waived many of those measures. Important: it did NOT remove all existing sanctions on Russia. ⸻ 7/10 So why do it now? One possible economic explanation: Less pressure on Russian oil trade could help keep more oil available globally. More supply could ease price pressure. And cheaper energy could help inflation. But that’s a possible effect, not a guaranteed outcome. ⸻ 8/10 There’s another side to this. Sanctions are not just economic restrictions. They’re also foreign-policy tools. They can put financial pressure on governments to change their behavior. Easing new sanctions may reduce that pressure, even if it helps stabilize energy markets. ⸻ 9/10 And that’s where politics enters the picture. The White House faces pressure over prices before the midterms. But critics also worry that weakening sanctions could reduce U.S. leverage over Russia. The challenge is balancing domestic economic concerns with foreign-policy goals. ⸻ 10/10 This is what makes political economy interesting. A decision about Russian sanctions can affect energy markets, inflation, diplomacy, and elections. The trade-off? Potentially cheaper energy today versus less economic pressure on Russia. Which matters more? ⸻ Sources: The New York Times (Oct. 16, 2026) Trump Signs Order Exempting Russia From Sanctions Legislation nytimes.com/2026/10/16/us/… The White House (Oct. 16, 2026) Implementing the Lindsey O. 1/10 Why is housing so expensive in California? Part of the answer may have nothing to do with the price of land or materials. It’s the years a project can spend waiting for approval. In November, California voters will decide whether to change that. ⸻ 2/10 First, what happened? California’s Proposition 45 would change CEQA, the state’s landmark environmental law. CEQA requires agencies to study how projects affect the environment and allows legal challenges when the review is allegedly inadequate. ⸻ 3/10 Here’s the economic problem. The law doesn’t simply ban construction. It creates a process: Study environmental impacts → take public comments → approve the project → potentially face lawsuits. Every delay costs money. And those costs can make housing more expensive. ⸻ 4/10 So what would Prop 45 change? For eligible projects, including housing, roads, water systems and wildfire prevention: • Environmental impact reports: 365 business days • Court challenges: generally 270 days Developers could choose the new process or keep the old one. ⸻ 5/10 Why would this matter for housing prices? Think about a developer borrowing money to build 100 homes. Even before anyone moves in, interest and other carrying costs can accumulate. The longer approval takes, the more expensive the project may become. ⸻ 6/10 This is a supply-side problem. If building becomes slower and more expensive, fewer projects may be financially viable. That constrains housing supply. And when supply struggles to keep up with demand, prices face upward pressure. Faster approvals could help, but lower prices aren’t guaranteed. ⸻ 7/10 But here’s the other side. Prop 45 doesn’t just speed up reviews. It also limits certain public comment periods, changes how alternatives are studied, and narrows what courts can do. Opponents argue that faster construction could mean weaker environmental oversight. ⸻ 8/10 There’s also a question of WHERE homes get built. Near Los Angeles, Tejon Ranch has pursued plans for thousands of homes outside existing urban areas. Supporters see an opportunity to expand supply. Critics fear more sprawl, traffic, wildfire exposure and environmental damage. ⸻ 9/10 California already expanded CEQA exemptions for certain housing projects in 2025. Prop 45 would create another pathway for eligible projects, including those outside the existing exemptions. But more approvals don’t automatically mean more affordable homes. Location, demand and construction costs still matter. ⸻ 10/10 The bigger economic question is about trade-offs. Slower reviews can raise costs and constrain supply. But those same reviews give communities a voice over development. California’s Prop 45 asks a difficult question: How much oversight should we trade for the ability to build faster? Trump's Russian Diesel Deal: Lower Prices, at What Cost? 1/10 Why would Trump ease sanctions on Russia after months of economic pressure? On October 9, he announced a deal to bring Russian diesel into US and global markets. But the more interesting question is: why diesel, and why now? 2/10 First, what happened? The US Treasury issued a temporary license allowing certain transactions involving Russian diesel until April 7, 2027. Trump announced over 300,000 tonnes initially, another 500,000 in November, and 1 million after that. These are announced commitments, not confirmed deliveries. 3/10 To understand why, start with the price. US diesel averaged about $6.28 a gallon on October 8, according to AAA, near September's record high. The war with Iran has disrupted global energy supplies, pushing fuel costs higher. And those costs don't stop at the gas station. 4/10 Why diesel specifically? Diesel powers trucks, trains, ships, and farm equipment. When transportation costs rise, businesses often pass those costs on to consumers. So expensive diesel can eventually mean more expensive groceries and everyday goods. 5/10 Now add politics. The US midterm elections are on November 3, just weeks away. High fuel prices have become a political problem for Trump and Republicans. More supply could help ease prices, and Russia has diesel to sell. But whether this deal delivers meaningful relief is another question. 6/10 Here's the twist. Just weeks earlier, Trump signed legislation expanding sanctions and tariffs targeting Russian energy revenues. Now his administration is temporarily allowing certain Russian diesel transactions. That raises questions about the direction of US sanctions policy. 7/10 But will it actually lower prices? Analysts are skeptical. The first announced 300,000 tonnes equals roughly 2.25 million barrels, relatively small compared with US diesel demand. Russia also faces refinery disruptions that could limit its ability to supply more fuel. More supply could help, but the actual impact on prices remains uncertain. 8/10 And not everyone sees this as an economic win. Ukraine's Zelenskyy criticized the deal, warning that easing sanctions benefits Putin. For Ukraine, the concern isn't just fuel prices. It's whether additional Russian energy revenue could weaken economic pressure on Moscow. 9/10 This is where political economy gets interesting. Sanctions aim to limit an adversary's revenue, but restricting supply can also raise costs for consumers and businesses. Easing sanctions may relieve some price pressure, while potentially weakening their intended effect. And neither outcome is guaranteed. 10/10 The same barrel of diesel means something different to everyone. For US consumers, it's about prices. For Trump, it's also about political pressure ahead of the midterms. For Russia, it's revenue. For Ukraine, it's leverage. The bigger question is: how much economic relief can the US actually gain, and what diplomatic cost might come with it? Why Are Banks So Worried About Stablecoins? The CLARITY Act failed to advance in the Senate yesterday. It needed 60 votes to move forward. It fell short. But the more interesting question is: Why are banks so worried about stablecoins? 1/ First, what happened? The Senate vote was about cloture. It is a procedural step needed to move the CLARITY Act forward. The bill failed to reach the 60-vote threshold. So for now, it remains stalled in the Senate. 2/ To understand the fight, start with a normal bank deposit. You put $1,000 in a bank. The bank doesn’t simply leave all of that money sitting there. Deposits help fund loans to households and businesses. That’s part of how credit moves through the economy. 3/ Now imagine people can hold some of that money in stablecoins instead. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value, often around $1. If platforms offer attractive rewards on stablecoin balances, people have another option for where to keep their money. 4/ This is where banks, especially community banks, are concerned. Banking groups argue that: stablecoin rewards → deposits move out of banks → banks lose a source of funding → lending could become more expensive or limited. Their concern is ultimately about deposits and credit. 5/ But there’s another side to the debate: competition. Supporters of stablecoin rewards argue that consumers should have more choices for where they keep their money. More competition could also put pressure on traditional financial institutions to compete for customers. So this isn’t simply “banks vs. crypto.” 6/ The bigger economic question is: How do you balance competition with financial stability? Competition can create new choices for consumers. But policymakers are also debating what happens if money moves out of traditional bank deposits quickly, particularly at smaller banks. 7/ Interestingly, the revised CLARITY Act included what banking groups called a “regulatory circuit breaker.” Under the proposal, Treasury would examine whether the stablecoin rules caused substantial harm to community banks. If so, regulators could step in. Banks argued that waiting for harm to occur would be too late. 8/ And stablecoin rewards are only one part of the fight. The broader CLARITY Act debate involves how digital assets should be regulated, the roles of regulators such as the SEC and CFTC, consumer protections, and the relationship between traditional finance and crypto. One failed vote doesn’t settle those questions. 9/ That’s what makes this interesting from a political economy perspective. Banks are concerned about protecting deposits that support their lending model. Crypto companies want room for digital financial products to compete. And lawmakers are debating how regulation should balance innovation, competition, consumer protection, and financial stability.
