@hydratedsprigs @TrevorAllenMD That's just another area the rules of the series deviate from the actual game - fusion monsters kinda "contained" the materials, rather than sending them to the GY. iirc, they also weren't really cards themselves (no extra/fusion deck)

@EveUsername Naughty Dog, and Playstation in general (see Order 1886 etc) are pretty notorious for this, so is David Cage, if you want some concrete examples of games I see people calling "wannabe movies".

@EveUsername No, you got it. I don't think it's black and white, most games people consider "wannabe movies" aren't 100% cutscene, 0% gameplay. But it's obvious where the budget, attention, and care went, and the gameplay is often left feeling shallow, derivative, or detracting from the story

@EveUsername I'm not saying cutscenes are bad, or even that all "wannabe movie" games are bad, just that they are not using the medium to its fullest. An FMV game can be essentially entirely cutscenes, and still use gameplay and story branching in interesting ways film can't (see: Her Story)

@EveUsername @Dankness01 They try to convey emotion in exactly the same way a movie does - through character acting, dialogue, imagery, framing, and music, but not through mechanics or the way a video game can become a personalised experience unique to the one playing it

@EveUsername @Dankness01 Art's purpose is subjective, ofc, but a large part of it imo is to convey emotion and meaning, and games do that best imo by using their unique language, interactivity. The "wannabe movie" game ignores this in favour of long cut scenes and scripted setpieces
