Here’s how the Rays bats are stacking up against the league thus far. The group is struggling in just about every area. Swinging at everything, not making contact, and not doing damage. Lucky to have 13 wins during this rough stretch.

Swing decision changes from 2023 to 2024. Top left quadrant is where you want to be. Rays highlights: Rosario is swinging at a ton of strikes AND has cut down on chases. Randy trending well in both areas too. Caballero is much more aggressive overall, Siri much more passive.
Randy Arozarena is off to a rough start, but I don’t see any reason why he can’t overcome it. Barrels, hard hit, chase rate, and flyball rate is all still there. Whiffs are slightly up & pull rate is down but nothing detrimental. Good matchup against a struggling Maeda tonight.
A good look at Santiago Suarez, who is possibly the best pitching prospect in the Rays system. Rare to see a 19 year old sitting 95 with this level of arsenal depth and command. TB acquired Suarez in a trade that sent JT Chargois and Xavier Edwards to Miami in 2022.

Caballero is off to a great start this year and he has definitely made an approach change. His swing rate has jumped from 42% last year to 57% so far this year. That 15% increase is the largest in MLB. Seems he’s willing to sacrifice walks in order to hunt pitches for damage

It’s very early, but Rays have been running wild to start 2024. They’ve stolen 14 bags (tied for MLB lead) and only been caught twice. Think they may have realized they should’ve ran more last year (80% success), and are pushing the envelope now.
Really liked what we saw from Aaron Civale in his first start, I think he’s got a good chance to have a big year. He seems to have narrowed his pitch mix and is mostly sinker/slider to righties, and cutter/curveball to lefties. Slider is sweeping more than ever as well:
Rays 2024 OD roster contains 8 players who were not in the organization last year: Alexander, Caballero, Maton, Palacios, Pepiot, Rortvedt, Rosario, Waguespack A pretty big refresh compared to last year, when the only new names on the 2023 roster were Zach Eflin and Kevin Kelly

Don’t think there’s a ton of upside in either of Goodrum or Rortvedt, but do think they will play nice roles for TB in the short term. Great to also see Austin Shenton make the team. He destroyed MiLB pitching last year and will be a key lefty bat while Aranda and Lowe are out.
Looks like Naoyuki Uwasawa is generating interest from teams, which means Rays will either have to add him to the 40-man or trade him. If he is added to the roster, he will earn a $2.5M salary when in the majors, $225K when in minors.

Ryan Pepiot continues to grade out well amonst starters, but he struggled to limit the long ball today, allowing 2 HR His improved 4-Seam shape has stuck, but he hung a few too many pitches in the zone, leading to a poor outing.
@RaysMetrics 95.5mph is up to 2-3mph up from his last year. And he makes it without sacrificing command. He looks like a borderline top 100 prospect for me.

Which team's team velocity has dropped the most compared to last year? #Rays. Last year's Rays were the fastest-throwing team, but this year it's the opposite. Why did this change occur? It may have been forced by pitcher injuries, but I think it was a deliberate choice. (1/3)

I’m not sure I appreciated this Chandler Simpson infield single enough last night in real time. 3.5 seconds H-1st 🔥 He stole 2nd and 3rd after this and has 6 in 4 games this year.
Every time I see Xavier Isaac, it’s not the power that stands out to me. It’s his athleticism. For his size, he’s an extremely impressive athlete. Has already made an impressive diving catch at 1B and just scored from 1B on a batted ball to left field. He was hustling!
