@K_L_Phillips But one it comes to, say, some late antique forgeries/declamations of Attic Greek, there are indeed cases where there is genuine uncertainty as to whether a particular speech was actually from the Classical period, since the Greek is so incredibly good and might well pass.

@FredFredSanders Modern Greek? κένωσις pronounced as 'KIN-e-sis'? An ancient would have been just as baffled as a modern. The only thing that it got going for it is the stress, where it's about time that English repent and stop applying Latin rules to Greek...

@PetrosMalik It's to mark that the r-sound is aspirated. Double rhos always are, which is what makes the spiritus unnecessary, if you already now that aspiration is indeed implied (which many don't know, I guess).

@DavidACBennett If this is so, why does the Bible itself say otherwise? I mean, look at Proverbs 3:31–32: "Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, for the devious person is an abomination to the Lord [תוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְהֹוָ֣ה נָל֑וֹז], but the upright are in his confidence."

@BradKlassen4 And *this* 1st cent. AD Heraclitus happened to be a very well know Stoic.

@BradKlassen4 No, you've got the wrong Heraclitus. You're thinking of the 1st cent. AD grammarian who wrote famous allegorical commentaries on Homer. The word αλληγορία is practically only found from the 1st cent. BC and onwards. The philosopher didn't define a term that no one used.
