Hellenic astronomy was not Babylonian or Egyptian astronomy translated into Greek. It was a distinctly Hellenic scientific tradition, with its own cosmologies, geometrical models, mathematical demonstrations and theories of celestial motion. Across centuries, the Greeks observed and measured the heavens through an identifiable succession of thinkers, from Anaximander, Parmenides, Anaxagoras and Oenopides to Meton, Euctemon, Philolaus, Eudoxus, Callippus, Heraclides, Autolycus, Aristarchus, Eratosthenes, Timocharis and Aristyllus, among many others. They used gnomons and sundials to follow solar motion and shadow lengths, klepsydrai to measure intervals, parapegmata to record stellar risings, settings and seasonal cycles, and instruments such as the dioptra and armillary spheres to determine celestial positions and angular relations. They developed star catalogues, celestial coordinate systems and chord geometry, while constructing competing models of the Kosmos, from early archaic cosmologies to geocentric systems, concentric spheres and the heliocentric hypothesis of Aristarchus. Mesopotamian astronomical knowledge had deep roots, but the major surviving Babylonian archives of systematic observation belong mainly to the first millennium BC. Egypt likewise possessed very ancient calendrical, stellar and timekeeping traditions, yet no long quantitative Egyptian observational archive comparable to the several centuries of Babylonian data later available to Hipparchus is known to have been inherited by Greek astronomers. The Greek observational tradition is already visible in the Archaic period, with Hesiod describing and using stellar risings, settings and seasonal cycles. By the 5th century BC, figures such as Meton and Euctemon were making systematic observations and compiling astronomical calendars, while Greek parapegmata preserved observations under identifiable authorities across the Classical and Hellenistic periods. By the Classical age, Hellenic astronomy had already acquired its own distinct geometrical, theoretical and demonstrative character. In the Hellenistic age, this tradition gained a major institutional centre in Ptolemaic Alexandria. Under the Greek Ptolemies, the Mouseion and Library gathered scholars, texts and mathematical knowledge from across the Mediterranean world, making Alexandria one of the great centres of Hellenic astronomy, mathematics and geography. Hipparchus later drew upon the particularly valuable Babylonian observational record, together with numerical parameters and sexagesimal arithmetic. Base 60 was convenient for expressing astronomical fractions, while the division of the circle into 360 degrees provided a useful numerical convention. These observational records and calculating methods were absorbed into an already developed Hellenic astronomy, but were not the source of its geometrical modelling, cosmological systems, deductive proofs or theoretical structure. There is also an important difference in what survives. Hellenic astronomy is exceptionally traceable through named thinkers, arguments, discoveries and competing theories, far more clearly than the surviving astronomical traditions of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Much of that material survives instead through anonymous or institutionally produced tablets, tables, priestly records and scribal traditions. Such records can preserve an established body of knowledge without preserving who first devised a method, who altered it, or what disputes shaped its development. A technique may represent the accumulated work of many generations, and once absorbed into a scribal tradition its individual origins may become impossible to recover. This makes their authorship and intellectual succession far harder to reconstruct. In the Hellenic record, both are far more visible.

Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were practising Pagans. Believing in the Gods, offering sacrifices, composing hymns, and honouring the sacred Mysteries. Here is the proof you were never taught: Socrates: ‘I believe in the gods as no one else does.’ (Plato, Apology 35d) Ordered a sacrifice to Asclepius with his final breath (Plato, Phaedo 118a) Plato: ‘First and foremost, the existence of the gods must be proclaimed and defended.’ (Plato, Laws 886a) Plato revered the Gods, was initiated into the sacred Mysteries, and taught the soul’s ascent to the divine through genuine initiatory rites—not as metaphors, but as sacred realities. (Plato, Phaedrus 250c; Symposium 210a–212c) Called upon the Gods and performed sacrifices before his voyage to Sicily. (Seventh Letter 332e–333a) Wrote hymns to Apollo, Artemis, and Persephone. (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers) Plato founded his Academy near the sacred grove of Hecademus, a site already hallowed by ancient religious tradition. According to ancient sources, Plato consecrated the Academy to the Muses by erecting an altar in their honour, establishing the school as a semi-sacred sanctuary where philosophy and religious rites were united. (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers; Plutarch, Cimon 13.8) Aristotle: Aristotle teaches that the ideal city must integrate organised religious practices, including sacrifices and sacred ceremonies. (Politics 7.9–10, 1329a27–36, 1330a8–16) He writes: ‘The land devoted to the gods should be divided into two parts, one for the worship of the gods by means of sacrifices and the other for the maintenance of the priests.’ (Politics 1329a34–36) ‘He composed a hymn to Arete, and set up statues and altars to the gods.’ (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers) At Aristotle’s Lyceum, named after Apollo Lyceius, the school upheld the sacred tradition of offering regular sacrifices and holding festivals in the god’s honour. (Suda, entry ‘Lyceum’)

We are not of the tribes of Judah. We are not born from the seed of Abraham. We don't trace our blood to the story of Adam and Eve. Our teachers were not Moses or Elijah, nor the prophets of Yahweh. Our lineage rises from the heroes, statesmen, poets, sages, philosophers and historians of Ancient Greece. Our sacred mountain is Olympus, not Sinai. Our inheritance is Hellenic, not Abrahamic.

ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ — The sacred contests of Olympia. What we call “games” were Agones, sacred contests in which excellence was put to trial before Zeus. Naked and oiled, the athlete entered the contest with his cultivated body as the measure of his discipline and worth. Through these trials he strove for arete, glory, and the favour of Zeus. At Olympia, the sacred prize was not wealth, but the kotinos, the crown of wild olive. Victory meant that mortal excellence had prevailed through discipline, strength and struggle, bringing honour to the victor and lasting glory to his name among the Hellenes. The absence of material reward carries a deeper lesson. Wealth, possessions and bodily pleasures belong to embodied life and pass with it. They do not by their mere existence hold the soul within the lower and fragmented order of sensible existence. It is attachment, desire and craving that fasten the soul to what is transient. When the soul makes temporary things the objects of its longing, it disperses itself among what belongs only to earthly life and cannot accompany it beyond death. When the body falls away, the bodily means through which such desires were satisfied fall away with it, yet the attachment of the soul may remain. The soul must then free itself from its dependence upon the sensible and material, relinquishing those desires that continue to draw it toward earthly existence. True excellence lies in cultivating what belongs inwardly to the soul, virtue, measure, wisdom and orientation toward the Good. The Olympic Agones were sacred contests through which the mortal tested the limits of his nature and strove toward the highest excellence he could embody beneath the gaze of Zeus.

Achilles for martial glory, Odysseus for cunning resourcefulness, Diomedes for fearless valour, Ajax for strength, Nestor for wise counsel, Agamemnon for royal command, Menelaus for honour, Hector for duty in defence of Troy, and great-hearted Aeneas for the destiny of a line that would survive it.

You are not merely descended from your ancestors. You are the living continuation of their becoming, the present bearer of an unbroken current of life passing through countless generations. There is no empty space between the ancient and the living, only transformation. Individuals pass away, yet the chain continues. Ancestry is more than biological descent. Blood carries inheritance, while language, memory, custom, character and the spiritual traditions of a people give that inheritance conscious form. Across centuries, religions change, customs fade and assimilation obscures what earlier generations once carried. Yet what one generation begins to recover, the next may strengthen and embody more fully. Language may be relearned, ancestral memory restored, customs revived and the Gods of the Hellenic tradition returned to living reverence. What history scattered can gradually be gathered again, transforming inherited potential into renewed Hellenic continuity. Behind you stand warriors, philosophers, poets, builders and innumerable ordinary men and women whose lives made yours possible. Their deeds entered history, but their lineage entered you. You are the living bridge between the ancestors and the unborn. What came before has reached the present through you, and what comes after will inherit what you choose to preserve. The ancestral flame does not survive by memory alone. It survives through successive unions and generations formed within the same people, each receiving the current of life to carry it forward. You are not the end of the chain. You are its present form.

Creation is procession from cause to effect. The Gods do not fashion the Kosmos from some substance independent of Themselves, nor from nothing. They produce through the superabundance of Their own inexhaustible causal power. Being cannot arise from absolute nothingness, for non-being possesses no causality. Every effect has its principle within its cause and is precontained there, not materially or as the thing itself, but causally and in a higher, more unified mode. What appears throughout the Kosmos as division and multiplicity exists within its divine causes according to their superior unity. The higher remains undiminished even when its power is received imperfectly below. What appears as disorder arises not from the divine cause, but from the deficient mode in which the lower participates in it.

Embodied life is not the journey of an isolated soul, but a continual encounter with other souls. From childhood until death, we are placed among families, friendships, rivalries, loves and countless passing relations, through which the inward life of one soul continually meets the inward life of another under the conditions of the sensible world. Every encounter possesses an inward dimension greater than its outward appearance. A word spoken without thought may remain in another for a lifetime. An act forgotten by the one who performed it may become deeply impressed upon the memory of the one who received it. The child encountered at school, the friend later lost, the stranger met only once, each enters for a time into the unfolding life of another soul and may become part of an interior history whose depth they can never know. Earthly events do not remain external. They are received inwardly through memory, thought, feeling and judgement, becoming part of how the soul understands both itself and the world through which it passes. The same encounter may acquire lasting significance for one soul while leaving little or no impression upon another. The outward event was shared, but its inward reception was not, for each experienced it through an inner world shaped by the unique course of its own embodied existence. Embodiment places every soul within an immeasurable web of relations with other souls. Throughout a lifetime, we enter the earthly histories of others as they enter ours, often without knowing what has been retained, forgotten or transformed through our meeting. Long after our paths have separated, something of that meeting may remain within one, within both, or within neither, according to the interior life of each soul. The significance of an earthly life extends beyond what any soul can know of itself, for something of its presence may continue within lives it has touched without ever becoming known to it. No soul can fully perceive what it has awakened, altered or preserved within another, nor the countless ways in which its own earthly history has been shaped by the presence of others.

The Olympic Games transcend mere athletic spectacle, embodying the timeless ideals of human potential, unity, and the pursuit of excellence. Born in Olympia nearly three millennia ago, they were a sacred union of the earthly and divine. Under the gaze of Zeus, mortals strove for arete, cultivating harmony of body, mind, and spirit, forever enshrining the Olympic Agones as a symbol of Hellenic identity.

The expression “Pandora’s box” arose from a Renaissance mistranslation. In the 16th century, Desiderius Erasmus translated the Greek word pithos as the Latin word pyxis, meaning “box” or “casket.”
