Offerings and stories to remember on Ganesh Chaturthi. A modak is a traditional sweet that is offered to Lord Ganesha. The modak symbolizes spiritual wisdom and bliss, the sweet reward of discipline. Puja rituals often include 21 modaks, symbolizing the five organs of action, five senses, five vital airs, five elements, and the mind. The word modak comes from Sanskrit: moda meaning happiness, joy, or delight, and ka is a suffix meaning ‘that which gives.’ Together: that which gives happiness. Modak and Mudra come from the same root in Sanskrit — to be joyful, to delight in, to be glad. Through Mudras (Sadhana) and Modak (Seva) we offer to Bhagavan that which makes us happy, and in turn He gives what makes Him happy. We give the small happiness of this world and He gives back His happiness, the eternal SatChidAnanda. There are so many stories of Ganesha that all can learn from. Removing Kuber’s pride of wealth and money. Removing Chandra Dev’s pride over appearance and beauty. Defeating anger personified as Krodhasura. Transforming the doubt and sorrow of Rishi Ved Vyas into bliss by becoming his scribe to write the Mahabharat. Controlling restlessness in the form of the mouse as his Vahan as well as mastering laziness by taking the form of a crow and waking up Rishi Agastya from untimely sleep. Ganesha is the first Deity to be worshipped in any Puja because He is wisdom itself. But, Ganesha himself puts the SatGuru before him, the only One who is greater than him. The SatGuru is the true auspiciousness, the eternal Vighnaharta, in the life of a bhakta. With eyes of love and a heart filled with sweetness, one can worship His eternal form within the Self at all times. This continuous Manas Puja brings every blessing, because the inner Guru receives and accepts everything given with love.

Shubh Ganesh Chaturthi. The appearance of the deity of wisdom, Ganpati. One first receives life from the mother. Just like Ganpati’s mother, Devi Parvati gave life to him. She lovingly formed his body with turmeric, chandan, and reddish earth. From her own self, the mother nurtures her child. She breathes life into her child. A piece of the Divine Mother is within each jeevatma, all are her children. Then she gently sends her child into the world, strong, full of energy, filled with purpose. But the child hasn’t yet come face to face with Bhagavan. The one hidden within the child’s heart. The one hidden within the Divine Mother’s heart. When innocence, purity, dharma, and love reach their perfection, when one has become truly Sattvic, then Bhagavan comes. But does He come softly? Often, no. Because Sattvic ahamkar, spiritual ego, has taken over the jeevatma. That is how Lord Shiva came and cut off the ahamkar that was preventing the jeevatma from recognizing the true self. When the ego is cut off fully, it is the death of the lower self and the emergence of the divine self. Ganpati lets go of his old self fully and receives a divine identity from his SatGuru. That divine personality is bestowed by the SatGuru, one cannot get there through one’s efforts alone. Because it requires the removal of the entire ego identity. Yet Ganpati received it because he wanted it. He was waiting in true Sadhana, in complete awareness, when Devi Parvati left his side. He wanted to know for what he had been created with so much love. He wanted to know who was the focus of his mother’s single-pointed focus. Ganesh Chaturthi is the celebration of wisdom, right knowledge, which only awaits the arrival of the SatGuru, to free one from all confusion and receive eternal life. Blessings to all.

One just has to search for Him in the right way, in the right place. Search with love within the heart and one will always find Him. Born at midnight when all was dark, Sri Krishna became the light of the world. When heaviness spread across the land and the flames of war were ignited by evil-minded ones, Sri Krishna became the beacon of support and love for all. Yet for Himself, he never asked for anything, never worked for himself, keeping always others in His merciful heart. He is the innate positivity that attracts all other positive qualities. He is the in-dweller of the soul, the cosmic being that created and encompasses everything, and the one who appears beside His bhaktas when they sincerely call for Him. Every precious drop of Bhakti is Sri Krishna himself. Each moment of His life should be meditated upon.

On the spiritual path, the mind is often washed like a cloth by the SatGuru. The mind takes on the colors that you most feed it. So it becomes a certain way after you have fed it the same stories, the same emotions, the same opinions again and again. And often then one looks outward and blames the world, blames God and Guru. “God, why do you send me so much pain? Guruji, why do you test me all the time?” But that has simply become your mind’s way of thinking, hence you see things that way. If you change the pattern of your thoughts, if you change your perspective, if you change the way you look at things, everything changes. How you take things, how you handle things matters the most to Bhagavan. But the SatGuru is the kindest of kind. He doesn’t just wait for you to keep falling and learn in your own time over many lifetimes. He takes the dirty cloth of the bhakta’s mind and with all His energy washes it and makes it clean. The process may seem like a heavy beating. But is it really? Not at all. Is the mind, is the person losing anything really? No. The pain is a lower illusory reality. In actuality, one is being cleaned thoroughly. All the negativity is getting washed away. One is being made new. On the path, many times it may seem like the mind is spinning out of control. But as a bhakta one should never fear or worry. In such moments, offer the mind more strongly into the SatGuru’s capable hands. Offer the mind Bhagavan’s name to calm it down. Don’t let go of who is helping you. Only God and Guru have the permanent answer to the problem, only they have endless unconditional love which is the true solution to every problem. Feed the mind with Vitthal Giridhari’s name more and more lovingly when the mind feels like it is spiraling. Then you can experience the flow of Bhagavan’s sweet mercy within your heart once again.

Everyone is fighting a fight that no one knows about. Never cast your opinion on a person or situation, because the pain behind their actions will also be attracted to you. When you judge or are jealous of someone, the suffering that brought them to the place they are at comes to you amplified. Everyone is fighting a fight that no one sees. What may seem so small to someone may be the result of backbreaking effort for someone else. Yet they are doing it. Pushing themselves internally. Forcing themselves to stand up when it would be so easy to just crumble. This is what amazes the SatGuru about the bhaktas. The true lovers of Bhagavan stand up when there is no outside motivation or reason to stand up. But they do it anyway. Bringing forth the enormous strength from Bhagavan’s presence in their hearts. The SatGuru’s greatest work and joy is to see someone blossoming in that way. Some pain is seen on the outside. But some hide their pain completely. They never show it to anyone. Don’t assume because someone is very positive or always looks successful that they have no fights that they are fighting. You don’t know how much their ankles might be weighed down, but they are giving it their every breath to fight to the surface of that muddy swamp and radiate joy, love, and peace to the world. Learn from the stories of the devotees. Learn from their amazing lives. Be inspired and walk with full force on your own unique path to Bhagavan. Know that the SatGuru’s entire love is with you. He loves each one as though they are His only child. The saints were also regular people. They also faced hard choices, karma, pain, and sorrow. The difference between a saint and a regular person is simply in how they take life. How they handle everything. How they react to things. How they keep themselves inside. How they treat everyone even when in deep pain themselves. It is the attitude that makes a saint or a sinner or a worldly person. When you transform your attitude, all can transform. All can become holy. All can be divinized while here in this world itself.

The SatGuru is the presider over time. One of the gifts from God that we most undervalue is time. Trying to find ways to pass time is probably one of the most common activities that people engage in. But the saints always felt the lack of time to serve their beloved God, the One they knew was manifest everywhere. They felt that time was never enough to love God, to adore Him who is extraordinarily in love with every one of His atmas. St Philip Neri from Italy and Sant Tukaram from Maharashtra, both would say how little time they had to be with God, to spend time in His blessed company. Love always wants more time with its beloved. Kaal, which means both time and death, has many deities associated with it; Mahakal, Mahakali, Dharmaraj, as well as the Sudarshan Chakra which is the movement of time. The SatGuru is the presider over all of them, the one embodying all those deities and their roles for the world. As Mahakal, ending the limitation of time for the bhakta. As Mahakali, freeing one from the fear of death. As Dharmaraj, giving the highest truth of Bhagavan to all. And when one has received the eyes of true perception, one can see His divine energy in flow everywhere. One can see that it is His sudarshan chakra which goes forth and brings about all changes. Finally, beyond all of these; He holds time still for the surrendered atma to come close to Him. The flow of time continues on the outside for creation to flourish, but in the inner consciousness all has changed. There is no more movement, away or towards. There is only the eternal Now, the presence of the Almighty. This existence beyond the catches of time is given by the SatGuru, He is the one who presides over these roles. In His palm, time is just another quality. It is His Shakti which brings time into existence and His Shakti which will stop time from existing. He is the one who comes from the place beyond time. From the pure consciousness of eternal love. But through the passage of time you’ve experienced in your life, have you spent it working towards His grace where everything just stops at the feet of Bhagavan?
