People don’t want to live in Haines House. It isn’t due to the temperamental lifts or concrete cancer. It isn’t even because of the black mould that sent one former resident so insane he claimed it was sentient. No. People don’t want to live in Haines House because of the ghosts.

That bit on the canal as it passes the back of the Haines Estate is notoriously ghost-troubled. Not just your usual phantoms - navvies, exhausted horses drowned babies - but the dismembered spirits of gangland killings dumped in suitcases. A sodden desire to come together again.

In Repton, members of the Clockmakers Guild were known by the same name as was given in the trade to the inner workings of the machines they built - Complications. It was also the name taken by their magical lodge within the borough.

In the 19th century, there was said to be a certain sail-maker near St. Alphege’s Docks who could stitch spells into lug and square sails that rendered a boat invisible to pirates or custom men. If not delivering invisibility, the spells worked well enough in terms of blind eyes.
