Today's #ootd is this 1893-4 Liberty & Co dress. Liberty and Co sold dresses in the Arts and Crafts style, which advocated using natural materials and folk techniques, like the smocking seen here. It also heavily referenced Renaissance and Gothic styles. @V_and_A #Fashionhistory

Alice Hartley married James Burton on July 23 1807. They were the parents of Anne Sykes whose #dressdiary I have been able to decipher and write about. Alice’s #weddingdress is not in the album but perhaps it resembled this worn by Mary Dalton Norcliffe in the same year @V_and_A

There is something languid about the cut of this mid #1890s rose velvet gown. Perhaps it is the slope of the shoulder, suggesting it might be shrugged off at any moment or the lazy drift of a long train. It just needs the hiss of gaslight and a brandy. Sold via @HindmanAuctions

You don't have to throw away clothes that are torn, stained, or damaged. Rethink and upcycle them into new designs. Simple upcycling like taking up hems and stitching on buttons only require a moment or two of your time, but can keep your clothes out of the landfill.

In 2020, Marks & Spencer launched a project called Shwopping (shopping & swapping), drawing attention to the textile waste problem. As a part of the project, M&S installed a display of 10,000 pieces of unwanted apparel, representing 5 minutes worth of textile waste globally.
