Very happy that our paper with Q. Ashraf, @GalorOded, B. Gershman and @HornungErik is forthcoming at @RevEconStudies. We propose the complementarity between physical capital and effective labor as a mechanism to explain the decline of coercive labor institutions.

Great paper that provides empirical evidence on a question that lots of people in the measurement literature were forced to make assumptions about! Hugely deserved @ptr_andre ! I hope you celebrate in style🎉

What are ways to encourage citizens to run for office? With support from J-PAL's #GovernanceInitiative and @FCDOREDGCSD, @saadgulzar and @yasirmkh looked into it in #Pakistan. Read more below ⬇️
``How politics is perceived matters for political selection & policy: when portrayed as enabling pro-social action ordinary people run for office, get elected, and make policies that reflect voter preferences.'' Recently accepted paper, from @saadgulzar and @yasirmkh 👇
🚨 Just accepted at @RevEconStudies 🚨 with @yasirmkh We study ordinary people's entry into politics as candidates in a field exp. We show that portraying the job as a prosocial one increases the chances they run & win. Subsequently, policy aligns more with citizen preferences.

Good to see this work by @eoinmcguirk and @DrNathanNunn who unpack mechanisms of seasonal conflict, accepted at REStud. Weather-induced resource scarcity in a neighbouring ethnic group leads to more agriculture-related conflict, but only when the neigbour is transhumant pastoral.
