@DP2thehill Phones have ridiculously low resell value, so no point in selling it, when you can't get a job, a home or help w/out easy access to one. Plus, Lifeline exists (USA) for low-income/disabled folks. It's not the 80s, payphones aren't a thing & internet acces is a requirement now.

A hundred years ago, if your kid got diabetes, the doctor's plan was to starve them. 400 calories a day. Some weeks, nothing at all. It sounds insane but there was a grim logic behind it. Type 1 diabetes killed children within months back then, and less food meant less sugar in the blood, which slowed the dying. Kids on the diet stopped dying of diabetes and died of starvation instead, just slower. Parents signed up anyway because one extra year with their child was the best medicine could offer. Elizabeth Hughes was the daughter of the US Secretary of State, so she got the best care money could buy. That care took her from 75 pounds at diagnosis down to 45 pounds by age 14. When her mother brought her to Toronto in August 1922, she could barely walk. The treatment waiting there almost never got made. Frederick Banting was a small-town surgeon whose practice was failing so badly he was nearly broke. He talked a university into lending him a lab for one summer, and with a 21-year-old student assisting, isolated the pancreatic hormone researchers had chased for 30 years. Five weeks after her first shot, Elizabeth was eating 2,500 calories a day with a pint of cream poured on top. She gained 60 pounds in four and a half months. She went to Barnard, raised a family, lived to 73, and kept the diabetes secret from almost everyone she knew. Banting refused to put his name on the patent. He'd sworn the Hippocratic oath and believed a doctor had no business profiting from something like this. His co-discoverers sold it to the University of Toronto for a dollar. "Insulin does not belong to me, it belongs to the world." 24 months from first injection to the Nobel Prize, and every diabetic kid on earth went from a death sentence to a normal life for the price of one dollar.

In 1922, this little girl was wasting away from type 1 diabetes. Four months after doctors gave her a new experimental drug called insulin, she looked like a different child.

The Border Patrol & DHS have officially destroyed the last grandmother cottonwood tree on O’odham lands. The tree was older than the United States.

@EspressoJose @interesting_aIl I'll bite, the city owned the building & already paid to maintain it. The "No Cost" means that the taxes don't go up. Tbh, with it being converted into rental units, it'll likely make the city more money than it would as an office building. So it's a win/win for the tax payers.

"Underage girls testing positive for pregnancy at detention centers." Let me fix that for you. “ICE officers are raping little girls in detention centers.” There you go.

Labor Day isn't a monument to a fight already won. It's a reminder the fight never stopped. Nurses standing up to Palantir. Starbucks Union boycotting their employer. Teachers and engineers threaten to strike. Worker protections under attack. That wasn't 1894. That was this week.

Appalling: Energy company drags a mother into federal court, trying to stop her from sharing FOIA'd records -- records the state *gave her* -- about an Arkansas data center. And it wants the court to censor newspaper coverage. She left the courtroom "weeping loudly."

They came and invaded our reservation at 4am, masked with rifles and using surveillance balloons attempting to break up our ceremonial camps. They have been utilizing the same tactics & equipment used against our Palestinian relatives.

I think the fact that the United States just legalized child pornography should be bigger news.

NYC hasn’t had a mayor with this level of emotional IQ since LaGuardia Big problems take time to fix, but he’s making a point of *also* doing quick improvements that people see when walking in their neighborhoods every day It creates a solid “things are getting better” vibe

Broken swing sets? Missing basketball nets? Have no fear, Renew Crew is here. Neighborhood parks are meant for recreation — not frustration. If it’s broken, this crew will fix it. If it’s run-down, they’ll renew it. Renew Crew: Coming soon to a park near you.

This is what we mean when we say slavery never ended. This is not incompetence its violence and its on purpose and racial motivated. This is why the south still raises the confederate flag on there homes cause they know it hasn't actually died. Its neither new or rare.

Louisiana is imprisoning people beyond their release dates. Multiple people are filing a class-action lawsuit for being detained after courts had authorized their freedom. One woman said she lost over 100 days. A previous departmental review found that over 2,000 people were

Here’s the mug shots of the sick fucks who abducted, sexually assaulted, and held 163 children captive in Florida. Not trans Not immigrants Not Muslim And you don’t even need to wonder who they voted for: The convicted felon and child-raping pedophile in the White House.

This is the guy who ruled that the stolen images of YOUR children can legally be used to generate child sexual abuse material. Share his face.
