robots.txt is a "keep out" sign, not a data license. Google Search Central (Oct 21): it "doesn't dictate what a system does with the data after it has already crawled it." Google reads only 4 rules: user-agent, allow, disallow, sitemap. The rest is dropped. #robotstxt #SEO

AI crawlers are hitting far more locked doors. Cloudflare Radar, Oct 14–21: 20.2% of AI bot requests got a 403, up from 4.3% the same week last year. Only 54% now get a 2xx, down from 80%. Collecting public web data is getting harder. #AI #webscraping

Getting past CAPTCHAs is now an official MITRE ATT&CK technique. v20 (Oct 13) adds T1696 Anti-Automation Evasion: paying humans or AI tools to solve them, or never triggering them by mimicking a person: browser fingerprint, session history, IP reputation. #cybersecurity #bots

Same Google search, three days apart: 9 of 9 page-one sites gone, swapped for a steakhouse, county health pages and government sites. Nozzle says 8.0% of 27.5M SERPs it collected since Sept 13 came back "poisoned," vs 0.17% before. No error, no captcha. #SEO #webscraping

Run a business page on Facebook or Instagram? From Oct 30, Meta's new terms let it train its AI on content from your linked website. No opt-out. Meta says robots.txt still applies. Legal experts warn the contract could be used to argue otherwise. #AI #webscraping #Meta

Your old NAS might be making money for someone else. GreyNoise found 143 hijacked NAS boxes, video recorders and servers in 34 countries. A bandwidth-sharing app turned each one into a residential proxy. Patch what faces the internet. #cybersecurity #proxy #infosec

Some cheap Android phones ship already infected. The malware lives in the firmware. Bitdefender's "Midnight Mimosa" turns them into residential proxy nodes and ad-fraud bots. Thousands of devices, 150+ countries. Uninstalling won't remove it. #Android #cybersecurity #proxy

Your AI agent can book the flight. The website just won't let it in. Amazon is blocking Meta's Muse. United's terms bar bots without written permission. Yelp only lets in agents that pay. The open web is quietly turning into an allowlist. #AIagents #webscraping #AI

178,000 hacked devices were powering a criminal proxy service. Dutch police, prosecutors and Shadowserver just took it offline. The ugly part: victims' own IPs can end up in criminal investigations. Know where your proxy IPs come from. #cybersecurity #proxy #botnet

New: the Roam Proxy extension for Firefox and Edge. Pick a country, toggle on, browse through a residential IP. The bug that ate a day: both browsers keep reusing the old proxy tunnel after you change the proxy username. Write-up + install links: roamproxy.com/browser-extens…

200 OK is the most expensive lie in scraping. Empty result lists. Cached payloads. Challenge shells. All of them return 200, so your retry logic never fires and your dataset rots for days. Write a contract per host: shape, volume, identity. dev.to/roamproxy/http…

How long should you hold a sticky session? Neither "forever" nor "per request." One session = one unit of work (login → paginate → leave). Rotate at the seam between journeys, where continuity costs nothing. Timers are the metronome problem again. dev.to/roamproxy/how-…

your residential IP is clean. your request rate gives you away. an IP is a story about a household: a few tabs, human gaps, quiet hours. 40 concurrent connections through one home line isn't a suspicious fingerprint — it's an implausible household. dev.to/roamproxy/your…

a german proxy IP doesn't make you look german. it makes you look like a US laptop using a german proxy. accept-language, timezone, locale, DNS origin, TLS all vote. mixed currencies in your output = the target saying which signal it didn't buy. dev.to/roamproxy/your…

most retry loops treat a 429, a 403 and a dropped connection as the same event. only two are worth retrying. repeating a 403 unchanged just makes the block stickier. the counter that stops you before the block lands beats any backoff formula: dev.to/roamproxy/your…

my inbound mail was dead for three weeks and every monitor stayed green. postfix up, port open, dns fine. i was checking that it was alive, not that it was doing anything. found it by accident. now i alert on "did anything actually arrive today". dumber check, catches more.
