A huge moment for this change came in the 13th century. Dyrrachion was liberated in 1259 after the battle of Pelagonia, a defeat for the Despotate of Epiros & the Latins. Michael VIII Palaiologos had…
Eastern Roman history is so incredible because it had so many stages of winning, losing, defending, dramatic falls, & epic comebacks.
A stubborn entity that began as a superpower but died more like a city-state…it’s also such a long history with over a millennia to learn about!

Why did the Eastern Romans seek peace, sometimes even paying for it?
Was it cowardice?
No! It was pragmatic reasoning: “We choose to make peace, even though it may cause us some disadvantage. When faced with two evils, the lesser is to be chosen. Negotiating for peace may be…
For 700 years arguably the best way for a Roman Emperor to prove himself was to defeat their eternal rival - the Persians.
Before Constantine the Great died, he had “began preparing for a major war against Persia…The alleged causes are unclear, and there is a good chance that…
