We identified highly non-random local connectivity, including hub neurons with weak location-tuning and reward-outcome tuning but a strong influence on neighboring neurons. This suggests that hub neurons may orchestrate the local network during goal-directed behavior (7/7)
We mapped causal connectivity of > 20,000,000 pairs of motor cortex neurons. Location-tuned neurons are organized in functional mini-columns with preferential like-to-like connectivity. (6/7)
they first found that activating tagged hippocampus cells in physically constrained environments produced freezing behavior ⚡️ BUT: activating the same cells in a much larger environment did not lead to freezing i.e. tagged HPC cells aren't hardwired to drive freezing per se
I’ve handled the review of > 1000 papers at @Nature. Over time, you notice aspects of presentation on which reviewers tend to comment. In the interests of minimizing hassles during review, I offer the following suggestions (a bit targeted to climate papers).
Here, inhibiting neuron 2 paradoxically increases its firing rate. When we electrically inhibit neuron 2, this disinhibits neuron 1, which in turn excites neuron 2. This example shows how confusing responses at the single neuron level can make sense at the population level.
