On Friday, I ran into @mattgaetz on Independence Ave and asked him about the Florida legalization initiative. Gaetz said he is undecided on whether he supports it because it's a constitutional amendment - which makes it hard for the legislature to make improvements in the future.

Whatever your views on optimal sentence lengths, truth-in-sentencing policies that remove the possibility of parole are extremely costly. The incentive to invest in rehabilitation and practice good behavior—which the possibility of parole provides—is very helpful. /1

On Friday, I ran into @mattgaetz on Independence Ave and asked him about the Florida legalization initiative. Gaetz said he is undecided on whether he supports it because it's a constitutional amendment - which makes it hard for the legislature to make improvements in the future.

Whatever your views on optimal sentence lengths, truth-in-sentencing policies that remove the possibility of parole are extremely costly. The incentive to invest in rehabilitation and practice good behavior—which the possibility of parole provides—is very helpful. /1

USSC voted unanimously to prohibit federal acquitted conduct from being used in calculating the federal sentencing guideline range, as well as other reforms relating to gun and financial crimes.
Fantastic work by @TheUSSCgov eliminating the use of acquitted conduct at sentencing and recognizing the brain science around youthful offenders. This is an agency guided by science and respectful of the jury's role. You love to see it!
