So here we are in the British Army of Occupation of the Rhine. And here I end my War Diary.
... through dense crowds, past the wonderful Cathedral to Hohenzollern Bdge where Gen De Lyle took salute.
Up at 7 am off at 9.40 in pouring rain to Cologne. Halted in centre of town, fixed bayonets, marched to attention....
Mass at 8 am in village church. Good sermon on proper treatment of inhabitants. Battn Orderly Officer, mounted guard. Men still cleaning up.
Took Coy to baths after lunch & paid out after tea.Baths in briquette factory; their fuel is excellent & made from a peaty soil.
Elec. trams & steam trains running on same rails to Cologne from here. Up at 7 am. With Coy all morning cleaning up.
Very nice billet over chemists shop.
Passed & saluted Gen Plumer outside village. Everyone in very grousy state. Keating like a big baby & getting worse.
Up at 5 am. Off at 7.30. 14 miles to Frechen. Passed huge factories. People getting more German and hunnish. Ankle very painful.
Men are very fed up with the authorities but determined to stick it out. Left ankle a good deal swollen & painful.
To Erp about 15 miles. Passed through several big villages. People very deferential but from what cause cannot quite make out.
Men's boots, feet & socks in a shocking & scandalous condition. If there is a reason there should be a good one. Up at 7 off at 9.
Boys very grousy but cheerful. Gave a great shout coming in. Fixed up very comfortably.
Up at 5 am off at 7.30. 17 miles to Vlatten. In about 3 pm.GOC Cailey took salute.
Up at 6 am away at 8.30.. about 15 miles to Rongen through very pretty woody rocky watercourse. Fixed up very comfortably.
Good bed. All very clean. Feeling very tired & stiff.
Set out again at 9 am & marched to Weywertz. Fixed up fairly well. Pope acting disgracefully. Gramophone after dinner. Slept on floor.
Saw plenty of Hun officers & men. All looked fairly sick. Crossed frontier at 1.45 pm. Halted at Malmedy for night. Billets splendid.
Staying in White Horse Hotel. Absolutely IT.
