This ISO-reviewed LCA analysis finds that, without pesticides, corn, cotton and soybean yields in the US declined by up to 70% and resulted in upwards of three times more land, water, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per unit of crop produced. croplifeamerica.org/news-releases/…

@SciSustAg The 1st #GMO crop registered & grown commercially was #canola in 1995. Almost 30 years ago… billions of acres GMO crops (corn, soybeans, canola, etc) grown since without problem. Why does #Greenpeace want more blind people?…by holding back golden rice? Why want less food?
We welcome Lord Caithness raising the issues facing UK seed breeders during the HoL debate on the horticultural sector. He rightly highlights the impact of increased regulatory costs, delays, and uncertainty on those who produce the seed as well as those who grow the crops that…
China Shows Progress in GM Crop Approvals and Plantings isaaa.org/kc/cropbiotech…
GM crop adoption:- 45% ↓ Herbicide use. 65% ↓ Environmental Impact. Evidence confirms that the adoption of GM crops in the mid 1990s have reduced herbicide use by 45%. This has reduced the impact of these chemicals on the environment by 65%. cambridge.org/core/journals/…
@SciSustAg @CommonsEAC @DefraGovUK The emphasis on food production and prices is very welcome and long overdue, but vague concepts like "food security" needs more rigorous definition, and asserting the popular assumption that all recent weather volatility is due to anthropogenic climate change is unhelpful!
Good article from @DGWilkinson

@SciSustAg The intellectual property issues need to be fixed before it can really take off in the EU
Plant breeders have so much potential to offer the UK in enhancing food security and sustainability, but as this great piece in the FT highlights, the UK must not miss the opportunity to create an enabling regulatory framework which provides the confidence to invest in long-term…
Why do so many people think we must learn from nature, mimic nature, or use nature as a standard for agriculture, when there is little evidence of any mechanism that would optimize natural ecosystems for producing food?
Good article by Brian Henderson Arable Matters - Scotland’s farmers are more likely to be left at the coos tail thescottishfarmer.co.uk/arable/2413939…
Between 1995 and 2019 crop productivity increased by: Europe – 7% USA – 35% Canada – 28% Responsibility for feeding the world is a global one and the EU isn’t making an equal contribution. Barriers to innovation in plant breeding and agricultural input use need to be removed.
In agriculture, we have to measure what we are doing and look to see how we improve it, without ever forgetting that is there to provide food and biomaterials. Great to see @GeorgeFreemanMP having such a good grasp of the importance of farm-level data.
'Harnessing the power of farm-level data' Inspirational op-ed by former UK science minister @GeorgeFreemanMP scienceforsustainableagriculture.com/georgefreeman
This is a great column by a British PM, scienceforsustainableagriculture.com/georgefreeman “the agri-environmental policy agenda has historically been dominated by an incorrect presumption that productive farming cannot be environmentally sustainable” H/t @SciSustAg
Everything you eat has been modified genetically by humans. Humans have been modifying plants and animals for tens of thousands of years. We have only recently discovered how to do this a little faster.
@SciSustAg What's nuts is "organic" (I guess not so "all natural" as their marketing claims) use PLASTIC (which then gets into the soil & plants) over more efficient, tested, safe modern weed measures. Anyone ever look at tons of plastic mulch vs. ounces of herbicide use impacts?
📢#NigelMoore, @KWS_Group shares that the use of #genediting in conventional breeding could leave organic growers with outclassed genetics, with higher risk of #disease and #pest & a wider productivity gap between organic & non-organic ➡️tinyurl.com/4v5b5skx @SciSustAg
Plant breeder Nigel Moore notes that public debate around gene editing has highlighted a lack of awareness in consumers that none of our familiar food crops are ‘in their natural form’, and that all have been adapted and improved by science-based plant breeding.
This will also happen in Christchurch eventually. Banning glyphosate was a knee-jerk reaction and has cost the council millions.
Classic! Council votes to reintroduce glyphosate after the streets and footpaths became choked with weeds and was branded “city of triffids”. Brighton kicks weedkiller ban to the curb after five years telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/2…
