Dario has written that we need to “pace the frontier,” and Sam has agreed. People may be surprised by my response: go ahead. You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement. I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible. But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier. Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want. Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well. So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it. If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.

@maximum You were talking about and asking for thoughts about sustained success. Here is another perspective.

🚨 Erling Haaland refuses to throw Sørloth under the bus after Norway's defeat to England. 🇳🇴 🗣️ Erling Haaland: Alexander Sørloth is a great player and, more importantly, a very good friend of mine. Football is a game of decisions, and sometimes you make the right one, sometimes you don't. People watching from home have time to slow everything down and analyse every angle, but on the pitch you have a split second to make a decision. That's football. I'll never blame him for that moment because we've all been in those situations. Every player has made a decision they wish they could take back. I'm proud of what we've achieved as a team. Reaching the World Cup quarter-finals was something very few people believed we could do before the tournament started. We gave our country something to be proud of. We fought for every badge, every shirt and every supporter who believed in us. Losing to England wasn't because of one pass or one missed opportunity. We created chances throughout the game. We had moments where we could have scored, and they had moments where they punished us. That's football. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you never point fingers at one teammate. We win together, and we lose together. I'll always stand by Alexander, just as I know he'd stand by me. That's what being teammates is all about. We leave this tournament disappointed, but also proud. This is only the beginning for Norway, and we'll come back stronger.

In Germany, a talented 14-year-old earns his club money. In America, his parents pay the club $15,000 a year. That single inversion explains why "we will not" is the most accurate line ever written about US soccer. FIFA built a global system for this. Training compensation and solidarity payments send a cut of every transfer fee back to the clubs that developed the player, from age 12 onward. Develop one future pro and your academy gets paid for a decade. Barcelona's La Masia, Ajax, every Bundesliga academy runs on this logic. The kid is the asset. US Soccer refuses to enforce those rules. When Seattle's Crossfire Premier claimed its $60,000 share of DeAndre Yedlin's transfer to Tottenham, it got nothing. Claims on the Dempsey and Bradley transfers died partly because the federation couldn't even produce the youth training records. So American clubs earn zero dollars when a kid turns pro. They earn when a kid enrolls. Which makes the parent the customer, and the product is whatever keeps the parent writing checks: travel tournaments, hotel weekends, $500 showcase events, private training at $100 an hour. Elite pathways run $8,000 to $20,000 a year. A comparable academy spot in Italy costs about 120 euros. Follow the incentive one level deeper and it gets darker. A club dependent on fees can't cut its weakest paying players, so rosters optimize for retention over development. The scouting pool shrinks to families who can afford the cliff, which appears around age 11, exactly when development matters most. The country runs a talent filter sorted by household income instead of ability. Every four years someone proposes fixing this. The proposal always requires the people profiting from the $15,000 model to vote themselves out of business. They will not.

“And every four years when the World Cup comes around, we will say that we’d dominate if we had a stronger youth program.” “And will we develop a stronger youth program?” “We will not.”

The Pentagon Press Association has just released a scathing statement against today’s updated physical control measures imposed on reporters covering the Pentagon by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth: “There is no way to sugarcoat it. Today’s memo by Secretary Hegseth appears to be a direct attack on the freedom of the press and America’s right to know what its military is doing. The Pentagon Press Association is extremely concerned by the decision to restrict movement of accredited journalists within the Pentagon through non-secured, unclassified hallways. The decision is purportedly based on concerns about operational security. But the Pentagon Press Corps has had access to non-secured, unclassified spaces in the Pentagon for decades, under Republican and Democratic administrations, including in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, without any concern about OP-SEC from DoD leadership. And this decision does not come in a vacuum: It follows the unprecedented move by the Defense Department this year to evict many of America’s largest news organizations from their dedicated workspaces. Journalists working from the Pentagon everyday will now have less freedom of movement than officers from foreign countries who are assigned to the U.S. military’s headquarters, as well as maintenance staff and concessions workers scattered throughout one of the world’s largest office buildings. This decision eliminates the media’s freedom to freely access press officers for the military services who are specifically hired to respond to press queries. We would welcome any serious conversation about operational security in the Pentagon with reporters, many of whom have embedded with the U.S. military in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and elsewhere and who have followed the U.S. military’s ground rules without fail throughout their careers. No such conversation has been offered by Secretary Hegseth or his team, despite regular outreach from PPA that has sought to keep in place a professional working relationship that has persisted for decades. The PPA is also concerned by the memo’s promises of additional security measures to come that appear set to further limit our ability to cover the Pentagon. Lastly, the PPA is puzzled why the DoD is devoting such attention to restricting Pentagon media instead of engaging with it as senior leaders have long done, including Secretary Hegseth’s failure to brief the press in the briefing room in his first 100 days.”

This is probably one of the best speeches in committee I have EVER heard. We often hear passionate emotional speeches and I applaud that, but this is a forensic dismantling of a woman who arrogantly thinks she and the administration she belongs to are above the law. THEY ARE NOT. Kristi Noem attended the hearing intent on being obstructive and dismissive and Chris Murphy gave her a masterclass in the constitutional responsibilities of government. I salute you sir. 🎥 TikTok - vm.tiktok.com/ZNd6nAsuy/

This 2016 video is just an incredible two minutes. Every second of it. It will be in the documentary.

The Trump administration has effected a revolution in foreign policy. Every country will consider how to wean itself off dependence on the United States. The Post-American World is now in plain sight. My take:

Trump and Elon Musk have wiped out the national database of police misconduct. Nearly 150,000 records of misconduct by federal officers erased, like it never happened.  Why would Trump get rid of the database he created? Because Trump will drastically scale back police accountability to appease right-wing TV and X commentators.
