If the object had not been salvation from eternal destruction, the price of the blood of God's own Son would have been much too high. - Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

Not only did Jesus not expect anything from the Jews in the present; in the future also he expected nothing for them. Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

It is capricious to take one feature of the prophetic picture literally and another spiritually. Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

🧵 Chiliasm is guilty of the greatest arbitrariness in interpreting prophecy; it is devoid of all rule and method and arbitrarily calls a halt, depending on the subjective opinion of the interpreter.

Even more extravagant are the expectations of the Socialists, these millennialists of unbelief, who think that in the future state of their dreams all sin and struggle will have vanished, and a carefree life of contentment will be the privilege of everyone. Bavinck, Rfrmd Dgmtcs

For the divine essence cannot be severed, wrenched away, or divorced from divine power, authority, and glory, each of which subsist in three persons equally. @MattMBarrett "Simply Trinity" p. 236

🧵 Begotten from the Father's essence from all eternity, the Son can be nothing less than equal with the Father in every way.

Unlike human words, whose power depends on the extent to which a person puts one's heart and soul into it, God is always primly present in his powerful Word. -Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

Notice, not even authority, which is synonymous with "almighty," can be withheld from all three. The Son is not subordinate to the Father, who is a greater almighty - that would make them two almighties, one less than the other. @MattMBarrett, "Simply Trinity" pp.152-153

The world after the fall is not "godless" nor deprived of all grace; avoidance, separation, and suppression are impermissible and impossible. - Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

Reformed theologians used the visible/invisible distinction in various ways as they wrestled with realities such as the presence of brokenness and hypocrites within the church while trying to avoid spiritual elitism, judgmentalism, or a split between doctrine and life. - Bavinck

Over against Rome, the distinction between a visible and an invisible church asserted that the essence of the church consists in that which is invisible, in faith, in communion with Christ and his benefits by the Holy Spirit. - Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

A proper understanding of sanctification begins with the conviction that Christ is our holiness in the same sense in which he is our righteousness. - Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

The Father justifies effectively; the Son, meritoriously; the Holy Spirit, applicationally. To complete the picture at once: faith apprehends, the sacraments seal, and works declare. - Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics

It should be firmly fixed in our heart that the kingdom of heaven is not payment owed to servants but the children's inheritance (Eph 1:18), which will only be enjoyed by those whom God has adopted as his children. - Calvin, Institutes

Yet because believers, while clothed in mortal flesh, remain sinners, and because their works, barely begun, are full of many flaws, God cannot favor either his children or their works unless he receives them in Christ rather than themselves. Calvin, Institutes

Christ's righteousness must answer for us, and must be as it were our surety at God's judgment, for it alone is perfect and so can beat God's scrutiny. - John Calvin, Institutes

For if someone denies works the power to justify, does he not attribute it wholly to faith? What else does Paul imply when he says 'righteousness is given us apart from the law' and that 'man is freely justified without the help of works'(Rom. 3:21, 24, 28)? - Calvin, Institutes
