Sir J.J Group of hospital Mumbai on record agrees to have 10 times 24 hours illegitimate duties for Anaesthesiology residents whereas General surgery department had four times Where is residency scheme guideline and Maharashtra state government guidelines? Wondering who has given authority to these colleges to break all norms and to implement their own duty hours?

Dear fellow Indians, Please help suffering first year PG medical students of BJ Government Medical College Pune First year PG residents of this college are forced to work 36-100 hours at a stretch with no week off Also they are forced to stay at hostel which is inside hospital premises Last month I received complaints from a few first year PG medical students of BJ GMC, Pune and filed three complaints on CPGRAM to various relevant bodies. Also filed a complaint with National human Rights Commission. But still they are under process. Today I sent complaint directly to CMO, Maharashtra and state Human rights commission of Maharashtra I kindly request every doctor associations, individuals & well-wishers of doctors community to use all means available at their disposal to ensure work-life balance for these children I was informed the seat leaving penalty is 30 lakh which makes the situation harder for these young doctors

A recent response from JIPMER Medicine department on various queries related to duty hours. This official response was provided by the medicine department. If any PG student is forced to work beyond above mentioned duty hours by senior JRs, you may complain to the HoD / Anti ragging cell of JIPMER / UGC anti ragging help line

Please have a look at PGs quitting data from JIPMER. Department of focus is anaesthesiology. Emergency medicine and orthopaedics. JIPMER Orthopaedics is well known for high level toxicity for more than 10 years. Apart from seniors’ regular verbal abuse in front of nurses, it was famous for twice 36 hour duties. In ICU you can feel this well. Please see how many of our young children were forced to quit due to cruel duty hours , seniors ragging & others yelling on round. Emergency medicine too had 18-24 hour duties whereas on RTI responses the department maintains an ideal unrealistic duty hours. If anyone gives an unbiased opinion about duty hours of these departments at present (July 2026 batch), kindly share . It would be useful to others to know to take a cautious decision to choose the college / branch Because insiders say there is a little change compared to previous batch even in Surgery & Orthopaedics on duty hours. But couldn't get exact details. You are lucky if you get a RTI response within 30 days from the Orthopaedics department. Normally it takes 90 - 200 days & the interesting thing is the response will normally be  “ We don’t have this information in our department”!!! | This information is not held by our office/ we don't have this information. To say this they need 100-200 days. PG Medicine students leave the seat due to below major four reasons 1) Inhumane duty hours & routine public verbal abuse by toxic seniors, HoD and other toxic faculty on rounds 2) Got a seat in another medical  college / got a branch which they feel better than current branch 3) Got a college near to their native place / where local language is familiar 4) Unable to adapt to workload ,  food & home sickness But we can attribute more than 70% to point number one among total quitting If we see a department has more quitting consistently we can comfortably conclude that the department is highly toxic and the concerned persons are not concerned about our children.

I have complained to Central Vigilance Commission & Ministry of Health & Family welfare on JIPMER’S non-compliance of duty hours and absence of maintaining record on actual duty hours and week off of resident doctors Please find below the response of JIPMER Let’s hope promises and professionalism on paper translate to the ground which is the need of the hour for our PG children not to quit the course or become psychiatric patient

Dear all fellow Indians, Let's see the root cause analysis of cruel duty hours of resident doctors I wish to clarify a widely believed myth on resident doctors. Most of us believe that 24 -72 hours even 96 hour inhumane & illegal duty hours of resident doctors is due to non – filing of doctors as the government is not having enough funds. This can’t be true fully. Please see the given list + 2362 nursing staff of PGIMER. Tell me who works 24-36 hours for the legitimate interests of patients No one. But only PG & SS students. Because they have internal marks, degrees and a useless thesis. So toxic senior doctors squeezes them cruelly and blame the government for under staffing Same time we must agree that UG & PG doctors must be recruited on permanent roles and PG & SS students must not run the hospitals. They are learners only. 1) Most of us convince ourselves that the government doesn’t have funds to recruit. But this is a myth. For example please see below list of employees of PGIMER, Chandigarh . Apart from given staff , PGIMER has 2362 nursing staff as on today pgimer.edu.in/PGIMER_PORTAL/… But none of these staff work 24-36 hours. How can the government not have funds to selectively recruit UG & PG doctors on permanent roles??? Let’s not say that the government spends just 1.84% of GDP. Let it be. But this money is enough to pay all the staff given If there is really a fund crunch all nursing staff, lab technicians, para medical staff will be doing double shifts and get no week off. But this is not the case. All pack their bags in 6 to 8 hours 2) In JIPMER you can see first semester PGs are squeezed cruelly by all other semester PGs whereas bullying by second semester PGs plays a major role whereas second and third year PGs get very much free time as they wish. Same with BJ GMC Pune where first year resident tells that second year PGs never have night shift at all. They just come around in the morning like consultants. Most medical colleges we see only first sem / first year PGs only work 24-96 hours and he / she becomes a toxic bully and sultan for newcomers. 3) There are very few departments of few medical colleges where even third year residents have 36 hours. Example: all departments of NIMHANS and O&G of AIIMS Delhi . I have observed once that the workload and duty hours remained same at AIIMS Delhi in two different semesters whereas one sem had 17 PGs and another had 11 PGs. What does this show? Total mismanagement of workload distribution between PGs of three years and between SRs and JRs. Even if the government adds 20 more seats nothing will change except 20 more JRs will be doing 36 hour duties without brushing and bathing So we shall not blame less number of PG seats So it’s all about cruel intentions of senior toxic, incompetent & unprofessional doctors that are in HoD , Dean , Director and consultant positions and their unwillingness & mismanagement By doing so they push meritorious children to run away from the college or commit suicide. These toxic senior doctors are to be blamed for the collapse of entire health care system majorly than the lethargic government that doesn’t fill doctors on permanent roles.

Dear all fellow Indians, Please note that none of the below staff + 2362 nursing staff of PGIMER works more than 8 hours in a day and get 8 week off in a month whereas only resident doctors are squeezed 24 - 96 hours without a week off? This is the case with all AIIMS + JIPMER+ NIMHANS+ Safdarjung and all state and central government medical colleges HOWFUNDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR RECRUITING DOCTORS SELECTIVELY. HOW FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE TO FILL ALL OTHER POSTS THAT TOO ON PERMANENT ROLES Please don’t believe the fund shortage theory. This is the master plan by toxic senior doctors that are in management that supports corporate hospitals If a talented UG & PG doctor has no permanent jobs in public sector, he will automatically move to private hospital and poor patients will be forces to move to corporate hospital by selling jewels or land

HOD and HOU can’t claim ignorance of what was happening in their department. If they knew about the ragging and harassment and failed to stop it, their accountability must also be investigated. Strict action must be taken against everyone found responsible. @IMAIndiaOrg
