Pick a dose that fills the basket without touching the shower screen when the portafilter is locked in.
Weigh it. Then weigh the same amount every time.
One variable gone before you touch the grinder:

@naruto11eth For lattes and shots on $800, give the grinder a real share. Fine steps make dialing in doable: the Baratza Encore ESP has 20 of its 40 settings for espresso (per Baratza). An all-in-one like the Barista Express is simpler, but you can't upgrade its grinder later.
Size is the first number on a tamper. Force is the second.
Force decides whether the puck is the same twice. A calibrated tamper clicks at 30 lb.

54 mm: eight Breville models, the Bambino line through the Touch.
58 mm: Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic, Oracle Touch, Ascaso Dream.

Shot time is a reading, not a lever.
Write it next to the grind setting. That pair of numbers is the whole record you need.

26 owner reports describe the Baratza Sette 270, from 6 sources. Room above it comes up most (7): two owners say it fits under a cabinet, others cut an inch or two off the hopper. As of 10 Sep 2026.

Four handles, in order:
Dose, held constant.
Yield, which defines the drink.
Time, which is a reading.
Grind, which moves last because nothing else is left.

A basket called 54 mm takes a tamper base cut at 53.3.
The base is narrower than the basket on purpose, so a 54.0 base does not go in.

No counter? Three layouts:
Cart, 24-34 in wide, locking casters.
Cabinet, measure the segment and the brewer's depth first.
Wall, 5-11 in deep, on a bracket with a stated rating.
Two move out with you. One is a patch job:

@cowgirlpsyop If you mean the Luxe Cafe Premier (ES601), Ninja's own site has it at $599.99 as of Oct 12. We haven't used one, so no verdict on shot quality or how long it lasts. Check its width and depth against your counter at the shop before you order.
The all-in-one corner: Breville Barista Express, a knock box, a tamper. One box today, two optional. Total $590.89, read 11 Oct 2026 at Breville and Normcore. The fit check says what to measure first.

@Silver_Hi99o For a machine with the grinder built in, look at Breville's Barista Express. Breville's own site has it at $499.95 today, down from $699.95. Measure first: it needs about 13.3 in of counter across and 12.3 in front to wall, plus room above for the bean hopper.
A small coffee station starts as a placement decision, not a shopping list.
One anchor brewer. Then only what it does not already solve.
Brewer first, accessory second, cart last:

@pinochlemeld Put it on the list, and ask for a grinder with it. At this budget the grinder changes the cup more than a second boiler would. A Breville Bambino ($249.95 at Breville, Oct 8) plus a Baratza Encore ESP ($199.95 at 1st in Coffee, Oct 9) covers both.
@hello_pixie_ If it has to be one box, the Breville Barista Express has a conical burr grinder with a half-pound hopper built in, plus a steam wand. It was $499.95 at Whole Latte Love on Oct 8. Two owner reviews on Breville's own site mention beans jamming in the hopper.
Measure your tallest mug before you choose a machine.
The Breville Bambino Plus gives 5 in under the spout (Seattle Coffee Gear, read 26 Sep).
Three gaps worth a tape measure:

A hand grinder fits in a drawer and runs on a crank, so a kitchen with little counter can still grind fresh coffee. It needs no socket.
Manual Coffee Grinder V3, Normcore: from $89.99, was $159.99, as of Oct 7.

Before you buy a machine that lives under a cabinet, measure one gap: counter to the underside.
We checked 36 machines. None state it.
