Another fun part of this paper was comparing the top 100 most borrowed S&C books to the US bestseller list from the 1920s. Almost none of the bestsellers are still read (Age of Innocence and All Quiet…) but about 1/4 of the S&C most popular you would recognize.

Barbara (Barnes) Blodget graduated from @smithcollege in 1923. That year, she traveled to Paris & became a member of Shakespeare & Co. In 1942, she sold her first story: "Fate Was Bigger Than Katerina" appeared in "Liberty" magazine that October. shakespeareandco.princeton.edu/members/barnes…

"Meeting Sylvia Beach for Tea" by Patrick Gregory now up at the Shakespeare and Company Project. Read his memories of Beach & Henri Michaux in 1958. "I had descended on Paris with the unoriginal intention of somehow writing the Great-American-Novel..." shakespeareandco.princeton.edu/analysis/2023/…

Ottensooser borrowed "Portrait" twice in 1922 and "Dubliners" once in 1923. But Shaw and Stevenson were her favorites—she borrowed books by each author six times between 1920 and 1929. shakespeareandco.princeton.edu/members/ottens…

Anyone know about "Books," a lending library that opened in 1930 on the rue du Mont-Thabor on Paris's Right Bank? Came across this article while trying to identify a Mrs. Arthur Richardson, who was a member of the Shakespeare and Company lending library in 1927.
France Emma Raphaël, one of the most prolific borrowers at Shakespeare and Company, borrowed a book on April 13, 1926, after returning Sheila Kaye-Smith's "The Tramping Methodist" (1908). We can't figure out the title: Princess what? Can you help? shakespeareandco.princeton.edu/books/princess…
Another puzzle! What did Mr. Sargent borrow on May 17, 1923? Was it Frank Norris's McTeague (1899)? We're preparing to update the datasets -- version 1.3 -- so we're trying to solve as many puzzles as we can in the next month.
Solved! Thank you @jscargot! The book must be Standish O'Grady's "Lost on Du-Corrig" (1894). Three other books by O'Grady circulated at Shakespeare and Company. 📷 Kelleher Rare Books shakespeareandco.princeton.edu/books/ogrady-l…

What did Andrée Valério borrow on June 19, 1924, along with Waldo Frank's "Holiday" (1923)? The first word in the title looks like "Lost" to us. That July, she wd borrow a bunch of books for an actual holiday, inc. "Moby-Dick" (1851) & "Walden" (1854) shakespeareandco.princeton.edu/members/valeri…

Adrienne Monnier opened an exhibition of artworks by her friend Charles Winzer at La Maison des Amis des Livres OTD in 1921. He designed Shakespeare and Company’s iconic logo for Sylvia Beach. (His initials appear below the Bard’s sleeve.)
Adrienne Monnier, Sylvia Beach's partner, proprietor of La Maison des Amis des Livres, and publisher of the first French translation of Ulysses, was born OTD in 1892.
Helen Vendler was the most important "adult" (ie generation above me) in my life besides my literal parents. Intellectually & personally. I'll try to say more when I can. Please go read what she had to say about teaching and about the poets she loved. Words Chosen Out of Desire.
Today we say a fond farewell to an old friend, as our James Joyce death mask bronze bust goes to a loving new home, where he can get the attention he deserves (and perhaps have fewer hats put upon hin)

I apologize if I don't respond to messages in a timely manner, or if I fail to respond at all. My mother has died. Some of you know that I've written about our perplexing relationship--but it turns out that grief hasn't heard those poems. I'll be back soon.
Go well Marjorie Perloff, and thank you for everything. A generous, funny, pioneering scholar who will be greatly missed. Here's to helping more students become 'little Gertrude Stein-lets': youtube.com/watch?v=hqeW86…
Last summer, I had the great honor of sitting with Alice Notley for a week in her apartment in Paris to conduct her @parisreview Art of Poetry interview. The result is here, in Issue 247 (with *two* covers). With deep thanks to Emily Stokes: theparisreview.org/back-issues/24…
Ulysses publisher Sylvia Beach was born OTD in 1887 themorgan.org/exhibitions/on…
Matthew Josephson died OTD in 1978. In his memoir Life among the Surrealists he expressed "doubts about the value of Joyce's experiments in rendering the myth of the Irish race-mind in his private Jabberwocky."
With grief, we share the devastating news that Tyrone Williams, our cherished colleague in Poetics and English and the David Gray Chair of Poetry & Letters, passed away this morning in hospice, in the company of loved ones. (1/2)
OTD in 1922 GB Shaw sent Ezra Pound a postcard regarding his refusal to subscribe to Ulysses. He began "What aileth three, Ezra?" and said he would see Joyce and his lady bookseller "d_________d first" before he would pay "fifty times what M. Joyce could buy my entire works for."
Sherwood Anderson died OTD in 1941. He spent time in Paris in 1921 and met James Joyce and Sylvia Beach
Conservative Member of Parliament and author Henry "Chips" Channon was born in Chicago OTD in 1897. His Ulysses order form from the @ShakesCoProject archive.
