Masayoshi Son gave WeWork's Adam Neumann $4.2 billion after a 28-minute meeting.
Salesforce founder Marc Benioff called and told him to turn it down. In a new interview, Neumann explained why he didn't.
"We met for 12 minutes and the ride is 16 minutes... He says 4 billion. 4.2, to be exact."
"He takes an iPad, he writes it all down... He signs his name and he hands me the pen to sign mine."
"Every step I take, suddenly the ego starts coming up. Oh, 20 billion valuation."
"By the time I walk into HQ 18th Street, I forgot what we were all about."
"The moment I lost it, everybody lost it."
Benioff: "I know you're not going to listen to my advice, but I want you to fly to Japan and say no to Masa."
"And I didn't."
In 2019 Son said, "My investment judgment was really bad." In 2023 WeWork went bankrupt.
SoftBank has since put more than $40 billion into OpenAI.
