The best way to navigate this imo is to realize some health professionals should probably be reclassified, as we do in finance, to non-fiduciary. Fiduciary is someone who is obligated to act in your best interests regardless of their own compensation. when you go to a non-fiduciary you might end up in a S&P fund with 3% fees when vanguard runs.01% fee. doesn't sound like a lot. but that's b/c you haven't done the math. for every 1% fee for a holding period of 20 yrs. , 20% of the final portfolio amount goes to the advisor/salesman/fund. So if you were going to have I million to retire, you instead would have 400,000. In finance we have a joke: where are all the customers yachts? It refers to the oxymoronic situation that mathematically they have convinced many to give their advisor more than half their wealth. It is tantamount to being asked to be written into the will.🤣 so in Jack's case, as he points out, you can see that non-employed drs created the space to question financial incentives. And now that he is off the system and instead incentivized by his tribe, we get this story. Raw. uncut. unfiltered. True story: I once waded into the pool to see how it was in non fiduciary land and it was similar This was an advisor employed by the bank. I asked the advisor if they were fiduciary. They responded yes emphatically and did not offer any additional info. So then I asked, "are you a fiduciary in everything you could sell me?" They responded no. 1st bad sign.... Then I asked ok what you got for me to do with my portfolio. They said well you should minimon move your cash from Savings to t-bills as they pay close to the fed funds rate. I asked okay what's the rate? They responded, "do you think I just know it off the top of my head?" I said your recommending it so yeah, I'd like to know. they said "okay give me a moment" They said proudly its 2.7%. I said okay what's the rate on the saving account ? They responded okay let me look. ... "It's 3% " The silence was long I will tell you that....🤣🤣 So my thoughts are find a dr you pay directly and know all sources of funding imo. if you don't most likely you are just speaking with a salesman
