Spot CVD For Dummies Spot CVD is a concept that sounds complicated, but isn't. Earlier today someone brought this up, and so I thought why not make a simple illustration about it. Imagine SOL is trading at $100. There are people waiting to buy SOL at $99 and people waiting to sell SOL at $101. If you decide you want SOL right now, you don’t wait around at $99. You cross the spread and buy from someone offering it at $101. You’re the aggressor, executing a market buy. Now imagine you own SOL and want out right now. You don’t wait for someone to pay $101. You sell into the buyers waiting at $99 - executing a market sell. Spot CVD - Cumulative Volume Delta - essentially keeps score of this battle. More aggressive buying than selling and you'll see CVD rise. More aggressive selling than buying and you'll see CVD fall. So why do we care about it? Because price action and CVD don’t always tell the same story. Imagine SOL price keeps climbing, but Spot CVD is falling. That tells me price is moving higher even though aggressive spot sellers are outweighing aggressive spot buyers. Someone must be absorbing all that selling. Now flip it around. Spot CVD is ripping higher. Buyers are aggressively smashing the ask but price barely moves. That’s interesting because all that aggressive buying is being absorbed by someone willing to sell into it. Neither situation guarantees what happens next. CVD isn’t a crystal ball. I would never make a trade simply because CVD went up or down. But it is a window into the fight happening underneath the price chart. Price tells you where the battle currently stands while spot CVD helps you understand who has been throwing the missiles. And sometimes the guy launching the most missiles isn’t the guy winning the fight. 🫡 From the depths — The White Whale 🐋
