App dependent users look to their smart devices to find what to do in many situations. App enabled people use apps as tools when they are helpful but are not limited to what the apps can do. They can make their own decisions and solve problems on their own.#HerlihyEME4390S23

Young people take less chances because they are directed by apps. Because apps are so carefully regulated, they hardly ever call for people’s creativity or problem solving skills. #HerlihyEME4390S23

Different generation we directed by different things. For instance, people in the twentieth century were directed by others like their neighbors. In the twenty first century, people are directed by apps on their smartphones. #HerlihyEME4390S23

The idea that apps influence our behavior to the extent that we are essentially following a script designed by an algorithm is very interesting. #HerlihyEME4390S23

I subscribe to this idea that we are becoming dependent on apps or technology; particularly young children. Kids are losing the ability to function without constant stimulation. #HerlihyEME4390S23

I think the idea that apps anticipate what information you’re searching for before you open them is very real. Oftentimes I’ll have a conversation with my friends about a topic and see that thing appear the next time I open google or youtube. #HerlihyEME4390S23

More access to information is certainly not the problem. We need to know how to critically analyze what we are presented with. #HerlihyEME4390S23

Technology itself is not the issue with politics. It is a tool. However, algorithms have their own goals and a means to achieve them. Not everyone is presented the same information. #HerlihyEME4390S23

There should definitely be more citizen involvement beyond biannual voting. I think more public debates where people meet in person to discuss controversial topics would be a great way to make progress. #HerlihyEME4390S23

The internet disconnects public discussion with whom we share a location. Ideas presented from other countries are reshaping views. #HerlihyEME4390S23

Algorithms display information based on a user’s interests echoing and reinforcing biases they already have. #HerlihyEME4390S23

With just about any idea, no matter how absurd, it wouldn’t take you very long to find an entire community online that believes it. Algorithms like those behind Facebook often amplify narratives that are untrue. #HerlihyEME4390S23

I like what former senator Daniel Moynihan said about everyone being entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts. The internet has certainly affected this. #HerlihyEME4390S23

I liked what the NYU Professor said about the importance of creating a trusting environment to make progress. The way universities are set up now, discourages this because anyone can report someone else anonymously if they say anything that offends them. #HerlihyEME4390S23
