One thing everyone used to know about Hull was that it had white telephone boxes, while those in the rest of the country were red. This was because they remained in the control of Kingston-upon-Hull Corporation rather than being taken over by the GPO, later British Telecom. This pair flank the entrance to the former Central Post Office in Lowgate, which after years of dereliction was thankfully rescued by Wetherspoons.
The Lowgate Wetherspoons (on the right of this photo taken yesterday) is called 'The Three John Scotts', because it sits directly opposite St Mary's church, which had three consecutive vicars called John Scott in the 19th Century.
@SimoninSuffolk I’ve enjoyed all these snippets from Hull Simon. Thank you. I had no idea.
@SimoninSuffolk Did you tip your hat to King Billy ,Simon??..(Old childrens novel..Henry Treece or Geoffrey Trease, memory fades as to author ,but the adventure remaind ..Great stuff)
@SimoninSuffolk Yes, it's now called KCOM. Used to have a software offshoot in Ipswich, but they sold it off.
@SimoninSuffolk The other thing everyone used to know about Hull was that all the taxis were Ladas.
@SimoninSuffolk I can't find it on Google but I believe the HQ of the telephone company in the early 2000s was the house of John Roe/Row a controversial nineteenth century & cult leader.
