I had to chime in about recreation in Norfolk. I’m not apologizing for the long thread. engagenorfolk.ca/multipurposefl…
1. Stop saying bring back the ice. That has been decommissioned in this facility. 2. Drive by during the day. The place is packed and the Senior Centre is buzzing with activity. 3. Norfolk has some MAJOR recreation needs if it wants to retain families and many more.
BIGGEST RECREATION NEEDS - a legit pool big enough for all user groups especially our local swim teams. - gymnasium that isn’t related to the school boards. Vball, bball, badminton, martial arts, etc have had a hard time thriving because of a lack of space.
Many have been bursting at the seams for years and unable to grow so they turn people away. - indoor running/walking track. - indoor turf for soccer, baseball, rugby and many more. - an ice pad. It’s pretty obvious this was a failed experiment.
In every case above, user groups or members of our community go outside of our area (my family included) in search of other facilities. SOLUTION - The Rec Centre/ ACAC is a fantastic place for the senior Centre. Keep it there.
Keep the pool warm for therapy and mobility swims, as well as for the thriving senior community. - if the fair board moved to a bigger location it would be a great place to expand and build on. Make a recreation complex other communities would be jealous of.
- if that’s not the case and we need to keep what we have, get dividers so more users can take advantage. Make half a gymnasium half a turf field house with a walking track. Might need to spend some money.
