Is it true that in July 2018, before the COVID-19 pandemic, 23andMe entered into a $300 million partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a multinational pharmaceutical company based in the UK, granting it access to genetic data from approximately 4 million of its 5 million customers at the time? And that 23andMe’s customer base later grew to approximately 12–14 million? Is it also true that in 2012, GlaxoSmithKline agreed to pay $3 billion in what was then the largest healthcare fraud settlement in U.S. history? The settlement involved unlawful drug promotion, including off-label marketing of Paxil and Wellbutrin, failure to report safety data concerning the diabetes drug Avandia, and related false claims. If all of this is true, why would 23andMe grant a pharmaceutical company with a history of serious ethical and legal violations access to the genetic information of millions of its customers? More importantly, did those customers knowingly consent to their genetic data being used for pharmaceutical research, and what safeguards were in place to protect their privacy?
