Stop networking at networking events. My best professional relationships started on a trail or at a dinner table, never with a pitch. Show up for the thing itself and business comes later.

I’ve built two CRMs and sold one. The most effective relationship habit I have uses neither. Open your messages. Scroll to someone you haven’t talked to in a while. “Hey, long time. Hope all is well. No need to respond.” The thing stopping you was never a missing tool.

Some friction is the point. Driving across town says something. So does a dinner reservation. Easy in, easy out is how you end up a mile wide and an inch deep. This week, pick one person and take the less efficient option 👇 yournetworkstartswithyou.substack.com

Your best relationship metric is already on your calendar. Notice how you feel when you see someone’s name, and how you feel after. Invest in the people who energize you. Just don’t confuse “hard” with “draining.” Want a version that ends with a question to drive comments?

In a group of 10,000, you’re an audience member. In a group of ten, you’re a person. Wrote about finding your corner 👇

Put up a /now page. One URL: what you’re working on, reading, thinking about. No pitch. Then leave it alone. Some of my best professional relationships started with someone reading mine and emailing me first. Everything else I teach is outbound. This one works while you sleep.

Don't ask for mentorship. Earn it. Find 3 people who've walked your path. Give value first. Then report back on how their advice worked. That last step is the one everyone skips.

I stopped taking notes in meetings. AI does it better. But the real win isn't the notes. It's what I do with the attention I freed up. Most people won't do this, which is exactly why it works. 👇 yournetworkstartswithyou.substack.com

Most relationship problems are self problems in disguise. If part of your attention is on how you're landing, there's nothing left to listen with. You can't out-tactic the feeling that you don't belong in the room. Your network starts with you. #SelfAwareness #Networking

Small talk is a doorway, not a dead end. Follow every "nice weather" with one real question about the person.

For years, we could predict which customers would quit in 3 months by asking one question: "why did you sign up?" Anyone who said "I'm just trying to build my network" always vanished. Turns out that's not a goal. It's a should. Broke it down here 👇yournetworkstartswithyou.substack.com

Stop sorting your network by importance. Sort it by trust. Who here would I lend $20 to without thinking? Who here would lend me $20 without thinking? Run it on 20 names and watch the order completely change. #Networking #Trust

AI will handle the execution. Our job is ideas, decisions, and relationships. I went back on Travis Makes Money with @traviscchappell to talk about staying human in an automated world. 🎧 podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tra…

You don't need to know everything. You need to know who knows. Connect people to the experts in your network, then follow up with both. That's how you become the first call. #knowledge #relatable

Relationships have technical debt too. Unanswered texts, dropped intros, friends you let drift. The goal isn't zero. It's paying it back before the silence gets awkward. Plus: why Inbox Zero might be a warning sign. yournetworkstartswithyou.substack.com

I call it a Scroll Back. Open your messages. Scroll until someone catches your eye. Send: "Thought of you this morning. Hope all is well. No need to respond." Most of your relationships didn't end. They just stopped getting texted. #thescrollback #network

That confident person you're afraid to reach out to? They feel like a fraud too. Everyone does. The only difference is they hit send anyway. Keep a list of your wins. Read it. Then go. 🪞

The best networkers don't have better intentions than you. They have a routine. We just shipped ours: the Sphere Sherpa — a guided daily workflow in Relatable. Triage new contacts, log this week's meetings, pick who to engage, reach out. A few minutes. Then you're actually done.

Being vaguely known by 8,000 people is about to become worthless. Discovery is splitting into two worlds: the algorithm decides, or a human who trusts you decides. Everyone stuck in between gets crushed. Which one are you building? yournetworkstartswithyou.substack.com

That flinch before you text someone you haven't spoken to in years isn't a signal. It's a bug. Approaching outside your tribe used to get you killed. The wiring stayed. The danger left. Worst case now: he doesn't reply. Send it.
