In 1998, after nineteen years of marriage, Alan Jackson moved out of the home he shared with his wife, Denise. They had been together since high school in Newnan, Georgia. They met at a Dairy Queen when he was seventeen and she was sixteen, married in December 1979, and weathered his early years as a struggling musician in Nashville. By the late 1990s, he was one of the biggest stars in country music. Instead of enjoying that success together, the relentless touring, career pressure, and personal mistakes pushed their marriage to the breaking point. For nearly four months, they lived apart. Divorce seemed likely. Everything they had built from nothing was on the verge of disappearing. Their separation played out while Jackson remained in the public eye, with three young daughters caught in the middle of a fractured home. Then they made a choice. Rather than signing divorce papers, Alan and Denise entered intensive counseling and fought to rebuild their trust from the ground up. He cut back his time on the road. They stayed together. Five years later, in 2003, Jackson sat down with his guitar and decided to put the entire truth of their journey into a single song. He did not write a polished fairy tale. He wrote “Remember When.” In just over four minutes, he traced their life from the beginning: two teenagers falling in love, the early financial struggles, the arrival of their three daughters, and the quiet ache of watching those children grow up and leave home. Most importantly, he did not hide the darkest chapter. Right in the middle of the song, he openly acknowledged the period when they broke each other’s hearts and stood on the edge of losing everything, before finding the grace to put the pieces back together. When Jackson played the finished recording for Denise for the first time, she broke down in tears. Released in late 2003 as the lead single from his Greatest Hits Volume II album, “Remember When” spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in early 2004. For the official music video, Denise agreed to appear alongside him, dancing quietly with her husband while real home videos and photographs from their youth flashed across the screen. More than twenty years later, the song remains a staple at weddings and anniversaries across the country. It endures not because it describes a perfect marriage, but because it was written by a man who nearly lost his wife—and lived to grow old with her. Choosing to fight for a marriage after nearly losing it all is the quiet truth that made “Remember When” timeless ♥️♥️

Today’s #KUCancerFighter tribute features an incredible couple from Lenexa, Matt & Chrissy Stewart. Perhaps, you’ve seen Matt’s work as an emmy award-winning TV reporter & anchor for FOX 4. Chrissy has been helping fight cancer long before her own battle, serving a clinical nutrition specialist, helping kids at Children’s Mercy. They’re both impressive individually, but absolutely amazing as a couple. Sadly, both are battling Stage IV cancer and yet their strength, resolve and bold determination to battle while also living life to its fullest is truly inspiring. Chrissy, now 47, has been battling angiosarcoma since 2021. Angiosarcoma is a rare cancer of the blood vessel lining that occurred her in ovary. Three years after Chrissy’s fight began, Matt was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. It started with the discovery of a tumor in his brain, then lungs and spine. Recently a second brain tumor developed that Matt, now 51, will receive radiation on next week, with a clinical drug trial to follow. Chrissy’s cancer also recently returned after being in remission for a year. She’s had to endure chemotherapy 3 times and yet, continues to be such a warrior in the face of everything she faces, as does her husband. Chrissy and Matt’s resolve to “live life louder, bolder and without limits” is a mindset and mission that you can read all about in their collective memoir, “All The Things”… one of several books Matt has now worked on, something that’s certainly helped with medical expenses created by their respective cancer battles. Matt even has a KU Basketball book set to be released in the Spring that chronicles KU’s all-time greats from all generations. The couple are also proud parents of three terrific kids, one of which Jackson, is here today as a senior business major in Manhattan. We celebrate this tremendous couple, the way they embrace & celebrate each of day of life as the gift that it is, continue to be great parents and pillars in the KC community all while juggling their own cancer battles. I was a year out of the NFL at this time, and so I'm going to the funeral. And the strength of this man, Andy Reid, he's standing at his son's casket. I mean, there's lines a mile long to see him. And I walk up to him, and I'm broken because I knew these kids since I was in college. I'm broken.” “And I give him a hug, and I'm crying, and I'm like, ‘Coach, you good? What do you need?’ Before he even answered my question, he said, ‘What do you need? How can I help you? You're out of the league now. You're doing different things, TV, radio, all this other stuff. How can I help you get to where you want to?’” “We're literally at his son's funeral, beside his son's casket, and he's asking me this. And I'm confused because I'm like, ‘I'm here to comfort you.’ And through all of this, he is still trying to help former players. Still trying to mentor. Still trying to do those things. And even today, when you hear players talk about Andy Reid, they say he's a father figure. He's a great man. He's the best coach.” “Even the issues that him and T.O. had, they're tight like this today, right? And so, you know, I think about guys like that. I probably could name another 50 guys that certainly had an impact on my Mount Rushmore, but those people have influenced my life in so many different ways.
