@ChrisCillizza@stoolpresidente (who I admire) is hilarious
I'd say never change but you've made it clear you have no interest in changing, regardless of reality
Have they been silent? There is far more discussion about Iran & Lebanon among DSA/leftist circles today than there are among Pod Save America/NYTimes circles, from what I can observe...
Notably, elected progressives (Bernie, AOC) were among the last Biden defenders into July 2024, because they weren't backed by the DNC interests that had decided to move against Biden. I'd suggest Biden (other than being old!) understood the policy AND rhetorical needs of the progressive movement more than any president since... idk, LBJ?
I'm just not convinced it's as simple as antisemitism and trying to hurt Dems, especially for the "average" voter (if such a thing exists in our algorithmic reality). Certainly, that is not what I'm taking away from last night's results...
This aspect of your criticism makes sense to me, particularly with your framework in mind which has been very helpful to engage with since 22/23. But to suggest voters propelled candidates forward because of antisemitism seems a bit too simplistic, particularly given some of the district demographics, and could miss valuable lessons regarding the necessary narrative changes (with skepticism toward foreign involvement, bigots, etc) to find broader / continued rhetorical success.
It’s also possible I’m conflating a few different things!
Obviously antisemitism is a serious problem among the (very) far left just as it is among the (not so) far right -- but having followed your work for 3+ years this confuses me a bit.
Doesn't a movement built around working class messaging that challenges existing structures align with your general framework, in that it's positioned to serve as a more effective opposition to the emergent unreality than the corporate DNC/neoliberal establishment? Doesn't this perspective serve as an ingredient in the necessary counter to far right populism?
There are obviously case-by-case specifics and nuanced details re: DSA as an organization, and I'd be happy to hear your specific thoughts here or offline, but broadly surprised to see you have a negative reaction to the NYC results.
@samstein@BulwarkOnline If you ever need a rogue progressive pro-Biden anti-DNC satirist to contribute to your fine publication, you know where to find me. Together we can redefine the horseshoe theory!
I have, actually! You’re right to point that out (but, citing my follower count is kinda mean tho & rude to both Chuck Todd and Newman from Seinfeld who both follow me).
In December 2022 I wrote about Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and its impending implications. In my estimation, the criticism shouldn’t be that I’m paying for a free site with only 300 followers, but that I’m giving money to a far right maniac. You might enjoy the piece, idk: sometimesweekly.com/2022/12/where-…
After the 2024 election I deleted the Twitter app (long overdue) and archived my personal account @nickbutler because we’re having this discussion on a platform of information warfare. Now I only use the shitty browser version a few times a day, similar to how I used an Internet forum on the mid-2000s.
I paid for premium a few days ago to see how it works, so I can understand it, and how it changes engagement. Probably won’t keep it. Though it did allow me to write this very long and unnecessarily detailed reply.
Peace!
@TVietor08 Is it good that your "god dammit this is so funny' tweet with a Trump clip has 2.2 million views? Or is that potentially bad, and a net negative?
@TVietor08 Have you ever considered you're addicted to Donald Trump and, as a result, spend most of your time amplifying his MAGA Kayfabe instead of creating your own compelling narratives?
@davetroy Did my best to explain this recently from The Chair of Ken Jennings on his Omnibus podcast, via the story of the time I witnessed Vince McMahon explode to death in 2007! youtu.be/NH3pXDX3ENQ?si…
A bit of advice for the coming years: never trust or amplify people who appear to have “changed their spots.” Once character is revealed, record it and move on. Duplicitous, insecure people are never your friends. Observe them, sure, but don’t be manipulated by them.
The problem is narrative creation: clear and honest messaging that acknowledges the failures of neoliberalism and unfettered capitalism. And, there needs to be a deeper understanding of how digital media, algorithms, and AI have / will change people’s understanding of reality.
