This 1976 variation of the U.S. national flag was designed by Henry A. Fredette. Reminiscent of flag design from the 1800s, this bicentennial celebration flag features a wreath of 13 large stars for the 13 original states encircling 56 small stars arranged in a double-Great Star.

I was not even a thought when America celebrated the bicentennial in 1976, but from what I’ve read, seen, and heard from those around me, it was a big deal. There was merchandising everywhere, in every possible way. Homeware, paper goods, toys—even Captain America had a bicentennial comic edition. There were decorations and celebrations, and it wasn’t just for July 4th. It was a year-long and nationwide. This leads me to my Thoughtful Thursday post: Are we doing enough for the 250th? I don’t know the answer, but I would love your thoughts! That said, please leave politics out of comments.

Each card flipped over to reveal a mini-biography, offering young collectors a snapshot of the person's achievements and legacy.

Big Boy restaurants jumped on the Bicentennial festivities early, rolling out a 30-card collection of American heroes in 1975.

Finally, it appears that Wayland, MA has created a painted hydrant program for the 2026 celebration waylandpost.org/community/part…

And this is a fun gallery of Bicentennial hydrants in New York from the early 2000s. I wonder how they're doing 25 years later. forgotten-ny.com/2003/08/bicent…

When recalling the most memorable activities from the Bicentennial, people who were kids at the time frequently mention the painted fire hydrants. These fire hydrants, painted to look like colonial soldiers, were a fun way for children to connect with the American Revolution.

Here's one for you, @IndianaArchives! To celebrate America's Bicentennial, the town of Bremen, IN, completed a fire hydrant painting project. They sent this miniature version of the hydrant painted by Paul Hirstein to represent George Washington to President Ford. #ArchivesHuzzah

Did your hometown paint bicentennial fire hydrants in 1976?

My in-laws gave me their bicentennial special plates when they down sized and we unpacked them today to put up with the George Washington painting Russell got me for my graduation:
