Great to read this new review of Spring Journal, by Rupert Loydell: "self-questioning, doubtful, awkward, responsive and elegiac... the taming, capturing and exploration of the chaos of a few years back makes for an engaging and thought-provoking read" tearsinthefence.com/2023/07/11/spr…
With this new canto comes a new challenge: 'Autumn Sequel' was written in terza rima, which, I'm leaning, is a lot more demanding than the 'elastic kind of quatrain' of the earlier poem.
Just like Louis MacNeice's Autumn Sequel, written in 1953, my new poem will be Not as Good as the first one, but it will be read by the brilliant @michaelehughes, so comes recommended for that. Do contact me or David if you'd like an invite to the event.
Next Saturday 28th August will be exactly a year on from the finale and full online read-through of 'Spring Journal'. @DavidCollard1 has invited me to join Carthorse Orchestra to mark the event. I'll be writing a single new canto... not of Spring Journal, but of Spring Sequel.
@RNewDatingCoach @Tiny_Camels Hi there. No it wasn’t recorded. Just an end of year performance, and edited - not all of it at all. But a great energetic production. And I’m glad it’s being read again! Thanks.
> Book 3: @tiny_camel's @springjournal @CBeditions. Going next to @FaberBooks' Collected MacNeice, which I'm aiming was last thing I bought @amazon for ages. All about @mainstreethare & @bookshop_org @bookshop_org_uk going forward! And @ToppingsEdin @BlackwellEdin when in town. >
My book length poem – written during Covid, modelled on Louis MacNeice's masterpiece, 'Autumn Journal' – is out now! "A restless, questing, witty, urgent piece of journalist-poetry" – Lucy Caldwell Line after line sings with truth’ – Linda Grant cbeditions.com/gibbshtml.html
@KerryMorgan5 @michaelehughes @artmusicuk @CBeditions Thanks Kerry!
'Spring Journal' launches this Saturday 5th December online at Carthorse Orchestra, with readings by @michaelehughes and music by Helen Ottaway (@artmusicuk). DM for details. Buy it from your local independent bookshop or direct from @CBeditions: cbeditions.com/gibbshtml.html
Now available to preorder from @CBeditions: 'Spring Journal', my in-the-moment attempt to make sense of Covid by way of Louis MacNeice's 'Autumn Journal'. "Restless, questing, witty, urgent" – Lucy Caldwell "Line after line sings with truth" – Linda Grant cbeditions.com/gibbshtml.html
And so ended 'Spring Journal', my long poem after Louis MacNeice's 'Autumn Journal', written between Thursday 19th March and Friday 28th August 2020. There was a full reading live that evening on 'A Leap in the Dark'. The full poem is available here: tinycamels.wordpress.com/spring-journal/
Tomatoes hang unripened on the vine, Nasturtiums curl their life into their seedpods, Swallows gathering on the telephone lines, As, close and slow, summer is ending in London.
Close and slow, spring is starting in London, Grinding up through the thickset lawn that, though too wet to cut, Still taunts the lives of retired generals and admirals, Who would have been out there now for certain, but
@theactualemma Here's @artmusicuk playing her amazing music to accompany the @SpringJournal readings. Can't wait for this evening. It is NOT TO BE MISSED!
[The final quatrain is written, but I'm holding that back for @michaelehughes to read, tomorrow night, to conclude the full reading of the poem on 'A Leap in the Dark', hosted by @DavidCollard1. Invite only. DM for details.]
