Unbelievably good book

Quite a contrast to my review of The Silkworm, ten years ago, where I accused Rowling of being too nice spectator.co.uk/article/j-k-ro…
Recent ultra-bland novel titles: Really Good, Actually. Normal Women. Normal People. Talking at Night. This Close to Okay. Joan is Okay. Okay Days. Everything’s Fine.
Not as wonderful as some are claiming. To begin with, we are asked to believe that the author was surprised to encounter fellow students who didn’t spring from precisely her own background. Can someone born in the late ‘80s, with a Tolstoy-reading dad, be this unworldly?

Love Sight & Sound, but think it’s regrettable that the BFI’s magazine includes 22 films that *won’t be released in the UK in 2023* in a “best films of 2023”. The BFI’s magazine should support British cinemas: bfi.org.uk/sight-and-soun…

Britain's global brand, comprised of Harry Potter, Richard Curtis and the royal family, is often described as a success story. But it is transforming central London into something that resembles a themed retail park more than a city. From my latest Pathos of Things newsletter:
‘She clings to the lower case, that humble posture full of arch pretension.’ Dozens of great lines in William Logan’s latest salvo newcriterion.com/issues/2023/12…
Watching David Fincher’s latest bellyflop made me realise I have never once cracked my neck before a difficult task. Does it work?

I prefer the first paragraph. The second is too ‘writer’. Might explain my limited appeal.
These two paragraphs changed everything for me – encountered them in @JonnyGeller's Ted Talk on writing youtube.com/watch?v=mD-uP2…
no one wants to draw attention to the fact that men overwhelmingly don't buy literary fiction (or the fiction you see in the books pages) and don't buy certain categories of non-fiction, rather than that men don't read women authors.
I mentioned Mary Ann Sieghart's remarks on fiction purchases in an essay broadcast on Radio 4's A POINT OF VIEW, as an excellent example of the base line fallacy. Sieghart had written, in the Guardian, that only 19% of purchases of Margaret Atwood's books were by men. I pointed+
They mentioned this in the Great Lives anniversary programme and it’s really interesting. There’s a similar reluctance by men to buy books by female authors.
“You think it will never happen to you, that it cannot happen to you, that you are the only person in the world to whom none of these things will ever happen, and then, one by one, they all begin to happen to you, in the same way they happen to everyone else.” Rest well, PA.
The Deuce was really good. It pulled off the neat trick of not romanticising 1971-83 in NY while underlining it was the last gasp of the individual. The sex trade & adjacent was hell but it was also a means for certain people to be free. Capitalism ate it like everything else.
What’s an HBO series (that’s not The Wire, The Sopranos or GOT) that y’all would recommend?
@RoisinCNorton A complete edition is in the works. It's being edited by Rosie Lavan.
When Daunt Books reprinted Celia Dale's books in the UK it was a nationwide phenomenon. When we republished them here in the US, the response was somewhat more muted. We wish people would give these a shot, they're truly chilling novels of domestic terror: valancourtbooks.com/a-helping-hand…

@adamm0rgan Really? I don’t see what’s so terrible. I like that it’s provocative, that it has an argument. And that it doesn’t play by the unspoken rules of book world crit. It reads more like reviews from 30 yrs ago.
@StarsThumbs Please read The Program Era and then Everything and Less by Mark McGurl and get back to me.
@StarsThumbs ... but everyone who learns ballet doesn't intend to be a professional dancer. Same with music. You learn to express yourself, to be in creativity. Writing: the same.
Part of my role at the Brick Lane Bookshop has led me to start The BLB, a literary review newsletter. Submissions of reviews and essays up to 800 words are currently open.
@MarkdeSilva1 epic continental humorlessness and pretense are not good influences on our swine dealing language.
This series rules. If you've not read The Girl with the Long Green Heart (bottom right) you're really missing out.
