Extremism and attention: Radical views are rewarded on social media, new research reveals. "[M]ore extreme or eccentric ideas tend to gather more 'likes' on social media platforms." psypost.org/extremism-and-…
@SteveStuWill @CostelloWilliam ...and in other news, water is wet.
@SteveStuWill @PsyPost "Radical views" seriously? "New Research" really? It's the formula Rupert Murdoch has been deploying for decades! Create controversy, scandal & sensationalism; it sells newspapers and clickbait.
@SteveStuWill @skdh That’s how progress happens. Through new ideas that someone calls “extreme”
@SteveStuWill Yep, we’ve incentivized being extreme. It’s like heroin too: the more you do it the more you need to do to feel the same effect. Not good. And when people’s income depends on this extremism you have financial incentives rolled in too.
@SteveStuWill Did we need research for that? The algorithms are designed to game human Dopamine response.
@SteveStuWill The western narrative is unraveling, late stage capitalism is failing us all, we are angry, enraged, aware, and making our voice heard. Everyone now has a voice, most people are suffering for the benefit of the few and these people can now be heard. Radical change is coming soon.
@SteveStuWill Social platforms lives of clicks. What's new?
@SteveStuWill @skdh radical isn't extreme, better make sure u know to differentiate radical and humanity vs extreme and humanity
@SteveStuWill So what?! Radical views have always been rewarded/objected by some group or another in all spheres of human activity. SM is just another forum for doing so.
