Some people have theorized that our modern world makes it harder for aesthetic movements to emerge, which supposedly freezes culture. We can identify previous eras by their dominant fashion — the 1960s Mod Look, 1970s hippie style, 1980s power suit, and so on. Supposedly, our culture today is too Balkanized, too customizable, and too easily mainstreamed through our digital devices (thus never letting things take hold). As soon as something becomes popular, it's swept out again by another fad. Sort of like memes. Thus, according to some, we don't see these distinctive aesthetic movements in fashion. (Last real innovation, I would argue, was probably the emergence of avant-garde Japanese designers in the 90s). In furniture and architecture, we can see the emergence of certain design languages because they were actual, stable movements, often reacting to the design language before it (which also required stability and elites). I am not totally sold on this idea that culture is frozen and I think we still see trends. For instance, every male fashion influencer nowadays has a 70s hairstyle, cropped shirt, and baggy pants. But the theory is interesting, and possibly useful for understanding what may happen if we give every consumer the tools to realize their aesthetic dreams, no matter how chaotic and incoherent their design language.
