The Harder We Work the Luckier We Get “I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11, KJV) Sometimes in business the less qualified wins the day. You may ask yourself, how does this happen? It could be a relationship that we did not have or an introduction that opened the door for a competitor or a myriad of other events. What you will find though is that while skill is important it doesn’t guarantee the outcome. Chance can win the day by continued positioning of your product or service in front of your customers with whatever method works for you. Hard work and effort can overcome many shortcomings and we find that the harder we work the luckier we get. Solomon names this honestly: skill matters, but it doesn’t guarantee outcomes. “Time and chance” touch everyone. That isn’t a reason to quit working. It’s a reason to hold our results with open hands. Here are three considerations: Sharpen what you control. Proverbs 22:29 says that a person diligent in their work will stand before kings. Keep learning, practicing, and preparing. Skill makes you ready when opportunity arrives. Hold outcomes loosely. You can control your effort, not the market, the timing, or the other person’s decision. Do your part well, then release the rest. Credit God, not just yourself. Success is rarely only skill, and setbacks are rarely only failure. Humility in the wins and grace in the losses keep us steady. Proverbs 16:9 puts it simply: “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” We plan, and God directs. Closing thought: Lord, help me to work diligently, accept the results with peace, and trust You with what I cannot control.

Numbering Our Days “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”(Psalm 90:12, KJV) When considering managing your time for success, note that every leader and every person gets the same 24 hours. The CEO of a large company and the owner of a one-person small business receive no more and no less. What separates a fruitful season from a frantic one is rarely the amount of time, but how deliberately we number it. Notice what the psalmist asks for. He doesn’t ask for more time or a better planner. He asks to be taught to count his days, and the goal isn’t efficiency for its own sake - it’s wisdom. That reframes time management: the question isn’t “How do I do more?” but “What deserves my days?” Here are three practical ways to put this verse to work: Start with priorities, not tasks. Before you open your inbox, name the one to three outcomes that matter most today. Busyness is easy, but meaningful progress takes intention. Protect your best hours. Schedule your most important work when your mind is sharpest, and guard that time from meetings and interruptions the way you’d guard a client appointment. Build in margin. A calendar packed to the minute leaves no room for people, prayer, or the unexpected. Wisdom leaves space. At the end of the day, pause and ask: Did I spend today on what mattered? Not perfectly, but intentionally. Our days are limited, which is exactly why they’re valuable. Number them well, and your work becomes more than productivity. It becomes stewardship. Closing thought: Lord, teach me to count today’s hours with wisdom, and to work with purpose and peace.
