BRUNO IS NOT THE BLUEPRINT Bruno can be right about United’s problems without being the answer to their future. His numbers deserve recognition. His commitment deserves respect. Neither settles whether his football is the right foundation for the next team. But United cannot hand a player the responsibility of making an incoherent project function, then make him the explanation for its failure. The club must define how it wants to play. The coach must turn that vision into repeatable football. Every player—including Bruno—must be assessed against what the team requires. That means looking beyond goals and assists: decisions in possession, positioning, pressing, control and how teammates function around him. His public criticism also invites scrutiny. Does he acknowledge his share? Will he support a coherent rebuild if it changes his role or reduces his importance? Those are fair questions. Assuming he would refuse is not. The principle should remain consistent: United carry the greater institutional responsibility. Bruno remains accountable for his performances and captaincy. He can have served the club exceptionally without being the player to build its next chapter around. Moving beyond him would be a football decision. Making him the scapegoat would be another failure of leadership.

@_abochie_ Depends on what your midfield needs. Pedri draws pressure and unlocks runners. Vitinha escapes pressure with quick combinations and controls the tempo. Rice stops counters, wins the ball and drives forward, giving others freedom to attack. Different ways to control a game.

@Ivan_Benjamin7 @TheArsenalMind Against a low/deep block, Havertz dropping towards midfield can draw a defender out and open space for Saka. Gyökeres offers more running behind, but Arsenal must find him before that space closes. It comes down to Arteta’s approach and how opponents defend.

TFS | WHAT DID UNITED ACTUALLY APPOINT CARRICK TO BUILD? Bruno questions the tactical instructions. Carrick questions the players’ application. But there is a question above both: What did Carrick and the board agree United would become—and why is that agreement not translating onto the pitch? We cannot know the detail of those private discussions. But “attacking football”, “United DNA” and “entertaining the fans” only take you so far. How do you intend to build attacks? Create space against a packed defence? Press without exposing midfield? Control a match when the opposition refuses to give you room? Those decisions shape who you select, who you sign and who you build around. If United wanted controlled possession, did they assemble the right balance of players? If they wanted fast transition football, why hasn’t the defensive organisation made that approach sustainable? And where does Bruno fit? Is he the player through whom the agreed system functions—or does the system keep changing to accommodate him? His criticism of the coaching can be valid while those questions remain unanswered. Carrick must explain the football. The board must explain why it appointed him to deliver it and how recruitment supports that work. The concern is that United still appear more comfortable exploiting the game an opponent offers than consistently creating the game they want. Months into an appointment, supporters should be able to recognise what their team is becoming—even before it becomes successful. If the plan was clear, where is the progress? If the squad cannot execute it, who approved the recruitment? And if the plan keeps changing, what exactly is the board backing?

UNITED CAN REACH THE FINAL THIRD. WHO’S ORGANISING WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Como 4–1 Manchester United. United completed more final-third passes, took more shots and won more duels. Yet Como produced four big chances to United’s one. The revealing number? Eight of United’s 13 shots came from outside the box. Como took eight of their 11 from inside it. United were getting forward. Turning those arrivals into clear openings was another matter. That brings us back to Bruno and the recruitment around him: are United building an attack better equipped to exploit space than manufacture it? Bruno’s appetite for the decisive pass can be a weapon. But a team also needs players who recognise when to hold possession, draw an opponent out, combine and move the defence before attempting the killer ball. Mbeumo and Cunha offer more than counterattacking threat. The question is whether their qualities are being connected through a coherent attacking structure—or whether United are collecting dangerous individuals and expecting the relationships to organise themselves. These statistics cannot pin the defeat on Bruno. Nor does one match settle a recruitment debate. Como’s finishing also stretched the scoreline beyond the 2.04–1.05 xG difference. But four big chances to one deserves scrutiny. When the space isn’t already there, who creates it—and how? That is the question United’s recruitment and coaching must answer. @FCBayernEN Deepest condolences to Joshua Kimmich and his family. Some things matter far more than football. Wishing them strength, comfort and privacy at this difficult time. 🤍

BAYERN v ARSENAL | SAKA’S STAGE These are the nights Bukayo must take ownership of. We know the discipline, the consistency and the work he puts in for Arsenal. Against Bayern, the challenge is to turn that influence into moments that decide the game. Beat your man. Create the opening. When the chance arrives, be ruthless. He doesn’t need a hat-trick. A performance can carry authority without one. But if we’re making the world-class case, we should expect him to trouble the best defenders and force the opposition to adjust. One night won’t settle his standing. Repeatedly leaving his mark on nights like this will. The stage is there, Bukayo. Make them remember you. The Football Strategist

@RodinSimi That’s like saying, “Sack the estate agent who got you into a mansion—you were much happier running about in your mum’s garden.” 😂

@sunnexxmcfc “Relegate us and we’ll make the Championship the best league in Europe.” Lovely. Then what’s the appeal for? 😂 You get your European super league at Preston away, and the Premier League gets to enforce its rules. Everyone’s happy.

@Emmyholy_ 😂👏👏

@FCBayernEN @Arsenal This has got all the makings of a proper European ding-dong. Expecting electric football from both sides. Beat the press and you’re straight at their back four. Bring it on. 🔥

WE’LL MISS YOU. THAT DOESN’T LET YOU OFF. Pep vs Klopp. De Bruyne doing ridiculous things. Agüero breaking hearts. Arsenal fans checking City’s score before their own blood pressure. Of course we’d miss those battles. But “the league needs them” can’t become “the rules don’t apply to them.” No punishment has been announced, and City are appealing the findings. We can debate what should follow without pretending the football settles the argument. Love the goals. Respect the players. Remember the title races. None of that buys the club a free pass. @Mcfc_page26 “Ref, you can’t send me off. I’m on a hat-trick and people have paid to watch me.” 😂

SAME ARSENAL. DIFFERENT QUESTIONS. “Why can’t Arsenal play like that every week?” Because the opposition have a say. A team sitting deep with ten men behind the ball asks Arsenal to manufacture space. There is little room behind the defence, crowded passing lanes and another defender waiting whenever you beat the first. You need patience, movement and combinations sharp enough to turn a small opening into a chance. Munich could pose a different examination. If Bayern press high, Arsenal must play through pressure before they can exploit the space beyond it. A loose first touch becomes an invitation. A well-timed pass can take several opponents out of the game. Against one, the difficulty is finding room. Against the other, it may be earning the right to use it. That changes what Arsenal need from their forwards. Sometimes you must hold your position and stretch the defence. Sometimes drop deep, protect possession or run beyond a defender who has stepped forward. The skill is recognising which action the game demands. Arteta’s principles can remain consistent: control the ball, support the man receiving it and protect the team against fast transitions. The route to goal changes with the spaces available. A difficult afternoon against a packed defence doesn’t automatically tell you how Arsenal will perform in Munich. Different questions. The same obligation to find answers. TFS | The game within the game.

BEFORE THE MAGIC, MAKE THE NEXT ACTION POSSIBLE. The first touch sets up the pass. The pass allows a teammate to advance. That movement creates the opening. Lose the ball carelessly at the beginning, and none of it happens. This is where the conversation around Eze needs to go beyond “play him centrally”. Position matters. Receiving near the touchline gives you different options from receiving between the lines. But wherever you play, you must read the pressure, secure the ball and recognise when to release it. If the route is blocked and a teammate is available, taking on another defender isn’t automatically bravery. Sometimes the pass is the action that moves the defence—and gives you a better opportunity when the ball comes back. At Arsenal, possession carries a collective responsibility. When a winger receives, the full-back may advance, a midfielder moves to support and the striker attacks the box. A careless turnover can catch all three moving in the wrong direction. Your decision becomes their recovery run. That doesn’t mean eliminating risk. Wingers must attempt things, and beating a defender can unlock an entire defence. The judgement is knowing when the opportunity justifies the risk. For Eze, the question is whether his invention can sit on a reliable foundation: a secure first touch, awareness of his support and decisions that keep the attack connected. The coaching must give him useful options. He must recognise and use them. A spectacular goal can decide a match. What you do between those moments helps determine how well your team plays. You don’t need a moment of magic every time you receive it. Sometimes your job is to make the next action possible. TFS | The Game Within the Game

@lawrence_bury Buvey, pace into what space? Ten men sitting deep close the gaps and deny runs behind. You need quick combinations, switches and movement to pull them apart. Criticise Arsenal’s execution, but a packed defence being difficult to break down doesn’t prove tactical stagnation.

@cityzenken_ Break spending rules to build a restaurant empire, then hire a brilliant chef years later. Yes, he can cook. But who built the kitchen he inherited? 😂 2018 ended the period examined. It didn’t reset City’s squad value, revenue or recruitment pull. Seven wins don’t answer that.

United lead and have created the better chances despite just 35% possession. What will determine whether this approach holds up in the second half—and when the counterattack closes, how well can they keep the ball long enough to reset? #LEEMUN
