Coming up for air here to say: I've had some time to think through the Penix pick and I still don't like it, but I do get it. 1) Next year's QB class is not good, 2) Falcons might be working with less draft capital next year thanks to tampering, 3) Cousins' age and Achilles
I've talked up Penix for a while. I really like him, and I think he'll be good, and I wanted him on the Falcons pre-Cousins. Hell, post-Cousins. It's the weight of the bet here. Penix has to be great or this pick will go down as an all-timer, and everyone gets fired.
I realize y’all want to hit me up and laugh at the Falcons but here’s the thing: I as a Falcons fan have been dead inside since 2016. Laugh and mock all you want, but it’s like a fly punching an elephant at this point lol. We expect the franchise to do drunk crap like this
The Falcons called Kirk Cousins when they were on the clock to let him know. From what I learned, Cousins understood a QB would be considered but he did not believe his successor would be taken in the first round. I’m told he’s a bit stunned.
The drafting of Michael Penix Jr. by the #Falcons is clearly a "we're not going to find ourselves without a QB again" move. But this is a gigantic gamble by Fontenot and Morris. Penix needs to become a franchise QB.
Every Falcons first-round pick is always just "coolest skill position guy regardless of need." By that very specific and confusing standard: A+

You know, if you were told on Thursday morning the Falcons would come away with two defensive linemen and a quarterback without any context into the order of those picks, that's not half bad.
If the order were reversed, and they drafted Laiatu Latu, Ruke Orhorhoro and Spencer Rattler, I think the perception would be much better publicly. However, I'm not sure it would've made a *gigantic* difference on the field.

I am really trying to like this pick and every new bit of info that comes out around it is not helping
Michael Penix Jr. did not take a top-30 visit to Flowery Branch. The Falcons only attended a 45 minute workout and met with him at the Combine. It’s almost unheard of for a QB taken in the 1st to NOT be on a teams top-30. In the end, ATL felt comfortable with the work they did.
All of that said, if I were Cousins I'd be pissed and it's weirdo behavior to not give your brand new very expensive QB a heads up that you're also drafting a QB in the top 10
