As a mom who gets it, can I please say something? Growing and birthing a human is a uniquely female experience and there are elements that only women will understand. Likewise, caring for a baby at home comes with specific challenges and struggles, and it’s usually mom who bears the brunt. But. BUT BUT BUT. Take it from someone who spent an embarrassing amount of time after our first baby feeling sorry for myself and telling my husband he just didn’t understand how hard it all was. Dads have their own version of hard, and it’s not given nearly enough recognition. Partially because they don’t verbally emote the way women do, and partially because talking about it isn’t as socially acceptable. When my husband became a dad, he went from being a pretty carefree dude married to a working spouse to now being the primary breadwinner for a family that included a helpless tiny human, knowing more would likely follow. He, as a man with different, God-given wiring, started carrying a mental load filled with things that often didn't even occur to me. “Do I make enough to pay our bills comfortably? If my wife heads to Walmart because our son needs something, that credit card will clear, yeah? What do we have saved up for emergencies? Kid’s gonna be in school in a few years, could I pay for private if we needed to? What about college, how do we best save for that? Yeah, I should probably take a look at my career plan and iron this out, I don’t think the current paycheck is gonna keep up. Also, how about the 27 projects around the house that need to be tackled? That deck is old, doesn’t look so safe. I need to bolt in the bookcases. We should probably have a security system. Both cars need an oil change and I think the truck needs new brake pads. Of course I only have Saturday, which I’m supposed to spend inside with the baby because she needs a break, but that yard isn’t gonna mow itself. Could I pay someone to do it? No, that’s just another expense. Speaking of, maybe we should get a house cleaner once a month to help her out. I can afford that, I think? Oh crap, it’s 5:30. I need to get home so I can help with dinner, she was struggling yesterday. Hope she's not mad, I told her I'd be out earlier than this. I’ll finish my work in the morning. I gotta make that deadline because again, tiny humans and bills.” And around, and around, and around. I was sitting there covered in spit up carrying the heavy weight of mothering a baby. He was sitting there covered in pressure carrying the heavy weight of being responsible for all of us. Both real. But I was often so consumed with my own load that I often failed to recognize his, and men tend to bear in silence. How I wish I could do those moments over. Sometimes I still have them. Moms play a unique role in childbearing and nurturing young children. It's beautiful but can be tough, and dads should respect and honor that. I think most do. But dads - if you chose a good one - play a critical role that comes with its own heaviness, and that deserves as much recognition. Either party can play the “woe is me” game all day long if you want to sow bitterness and resentment. I would highly suggest choosing humility and grace instead. That weight gets so much lighter than you'd think.

Just remembering that baby care is a whole aspect of stay at home momming These men have no idea what they’re talking about, being a mom is truly hard. Hard in different ways at different times It’s joyful & fulfilling, but it is really hard sometimes
